Card Magic Beginners and Newbies

Postby JammyT » Nov 18th, '11, 16:38

I just thought I would share some of Daryl (the Magician's Magician) recommendations for beginner card magicians out there wondering where to start. (for what it's worth)

I have posted this a couple of times but not really adressing it to beginners or newcomers.

'Reading (removed by me as not relevent) is great, but it's even more important to practice and LEARN by DOING what you've read.

If you enjoy reading about card magic, the Card College series by Roberto Giobbi (volumes 1-5) is EXCELLENT!

If you would prefer ONE BOOK as opposed to a series, The Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard and Braue is great. After this, you could advance to Expert Card Technique by the same authors. This is how I got started. (Interesting)

A newer single book that is also wonderful is Joshua Jay's Amazing Book of Cards. This was published by Workman Publishing in New York, it comes with a DVD, and it's available from "regular" book stores!

This is MORE than enough to keep you very busy for YEARS! Enjoy the journey...

Cheers!

Daryl'

There are lots of other books available of course but at least you know that Daryl's route served him very well.

Having all five volumes of Card College sitting on the shelf is very inspirational - you can always dip in and find great stuff in there, although it's best to work through them in order for maximum learning

He did re-iterate how good Card College was

I asked him about covering the same ground after reading both Royal Road, Expert Techniques and then also reading Card College - he said it doesn't matter (to him anyway)

if a good writer / card magician covered the same stuff as say, Royal Road he would probably still read it anyway

I'm not so sure, my time and money is too precious to me

ever thought about Giobbi's card College DVD's

I think volumes 1 -2 are out now but will cost you as much as the entire collection of books
