Magic Circle Membership

Postby Johnny Wizz » Nov 30th, '11, 16:36

I am looking at possibly applying to join the Magic Circle. I am aware that there is an interview and an audition, I am hoping that some of you on here might be able to give me some guidance.

It is the audition that I particularly need to understand better. I am a reasonable close up magician, people pay me to perform and have me back. I can handle enough sleights to get me through some convincing card tricks and I have a spongeball routine and some other bits and pieces that I put in. I use gimmicked decks where appropriate but understand that this cannot be the basis of an audition. I would expect to work without gimmicks.

It is the actual content of the audition that I am usure of. I do not develop my own tricks. I learn tricks and perform them. I have a wide basis for material and adapt tricks to suit my style and ability. Will I be expected to perform original material at an audition, do I need to create my own material or can I use the stuff I put out every week?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I'm not a member but did have a look at their website a little while ago. I'm pretty sure there's a section on there somewhere with audition advice and that kind of stuff. Its not hugely informative I'm afraid, but its a start.

from what i remember, it said something like they are not expecting you to be the best magician in the world, but you must be able to perform sleights well and must have a good patter and performance style. Again, this is just from memory, so don't quote me on that. I'm sure there's people on here who will be able to help you properly :)
best of luck (not that i think you need luck of course!)

there is a criteria on the site of what is expected of you in your audition

but i thought before you are even considered, you need to be referred / your membership proposed by an existing member

there are different levels (grades) of membership depending on how well you are marked in your audition

here is a link to the marking guidance

ER No. as far as i am aware, you can use any methods to perform your magic in an audition.
remember, presentation, is the vital element in any magic performance.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Any moderately solid performer will pass the audition easily, so firstly, don't panic! If you get paid to perform, that actually puts you ahead of some of the Magic Circle members. Just do what you would normally do, and treat them like a lay audience. The other thing to remember is that they are, for the most part, nice guys. They want you to do well. Best of luck with it.
