As you can tell from my username, I'm mostly into wallets. I do some card tricks and mentalism but don't know very much about other types of magic.

I've been looking at magic sets to give to the children of some relatives for Christmas, and have not been very impressed with what I have seen on the market. So, I'm putting one together myself to give them ( girl 10 boy 8 ) and would appreciate any ideas as to what should be included. I think it'll need 10-12 items to make it worthwhile. I don't really have a budget but somewhere between £40.00-£50.00 is doable.

I'm thinking of starting the set with a Stripper deck, Svengali deck and a Himber Wallet (of course).

Any suggestions about what else I should consider to go in would be most welcome.

Sounds like your looking at teh wrong sets. The New Stephen Mulhern set, contains some nice bits, including Karate coin, and a card slide that kind of works like wow.

There is also a lovely magic set made by an american firm, where the props are all made from wood. this is sometimes available via ebay, but is advertised on amazon.

Thanks for those Dale. A Melissa and Doug and Complete Magician combo should do it. A lot cheaper than buying separates.

Most of the reviews of magic sets I read didn't have a very high opinion of them.

the book that comes with the complete magician, has been hailed by many as todays Wilson course. This lot will give any budding magician a good start.

You need to include a book of some sort. Mark Wilson's is the best, but a bit bulky for including in a magic set (maybe not - you are the judge).
Include a regular deck of cards and a svengali deck, a thumb-tip and silk, appropriate lengths of rope for a Professor's Nightmare, then maybe a small coin effect such as the Dynamic Coins. That should be enough to get them started.

I ordered the three Melissa and Doug magic sets still available from Amazon on Wednesday and they've just arrived.

I have to say they look extremely good quality for the price. Found some youtube performances for them and think the kids will love em'.
