children's magic shows

Postby Nic Castle » Dec 4th, '11, 11:38

Recently I have seen a couple of magicians at childrens parties I attended with my daughter. Both very different in style but both good. The second one promoted himself more as a magician than childrens entertainer and had a very nice back drop which said he was a magician all the different styles of magic and as seen on TV.

He did two one hour slots and at the end of the first hour was getting bored. He had the children jumping up and down and screaming etc. He performed approx4-5 effects in the hour and some parents commented that for a magician he didn't perform much magic. He did have a wide age group of children aged 4 to 8. If was wondering what length other performers perform for and how many effects they use.

Nic.

For me, 5 - 6 effects in about 45 Minutes is about right. Most of the time would be about entertaining the children. Children get bored so easily and you don't need loads of magic in my opinion unless you advertise yourself as a dedicated Childrens Magician and not a Childrens Entertainer. I tend to do a 45 minute entertainment/magic show first, then food etc. Then I finish up with Games, Magic and disco for the last hour. Works for me and I get lots of repeat business.

Two hour long shows seems to be a bit much. I do an hour of magic (about five effects). If I am hired for a full party (less common in Ireland than the UK) I do a thirty minute show to begin (two to three effects), then face-painting, balloons, games, etc, then end with another thirty minute show.

I do about six or seven effects in a 45 minute show. If it's a two hour party, then I do the party games before the magic show, and the balloons afterwards.

Thank you for all your replies. I have only done parties were I perform a 30 minute magic act. I was surprised at the differences I in both styles and quality.

Hey mate

I only have a few gigs under my belt, but here's how I started - the act has been chopped and changed quite a bit, e'g I have dropped Comedy egg can now as most 4 year olds can't read, so the DO NOT REMOVE humour is somewhat lost...anyways..

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...
