Do you eat or drink soup?

Postby Beardy » Dec 11th, '11, 18:23

Me and a friend were talking...

Imagine soup in a bowl - smooth, not something like minestrone.

You have a spoon to consume it with.

I said you are eating the soup.

"But", he said, "what if you are consuming it from a cup with no utensil? Is it not then drinking?"

Hmmmmmmm.....

Do you eat or drink soup?

Is it a food item? What if it is a tomato soup with no bits in? Is it not a drink?

What if you have it from a cup? A Bowl? Sip it up from a bowl with no spoon? Use a spoon in a cup?

What is soup????????

Love

Chris

Hmmm ..... by the same token - if you consume your tea/coffee out of a cup, using a spoon, are you eating or drinking it lol ???

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

I would have thought that the name of the action would be determined by the action being performed, hence being able to name it.

Or words to that effect...

I drink from a cup, and eat from a bowl.
I use a straw to aid drinking. I use a knife, fork or spoon to aid eating.

In some countries [Japan ?] it is acceptable to drink [or slurp] certain foods from a bowl.
I read somewhere that some languages have no distinction between the word 'eat' and the word 'drink.'

Eat. Definitely. If it's viscous you are not really drinking it in my opinion, like yoghurt, theoretically you can pour it in to your mouth but I would not consider it a drink per se. Although McDonald's milkshake is at least as thick and you drink that. :(

Chris, get a job. :P

If you use a utensil on soup, you're eating it. If you consume it directly, you're drinking it.

This is exactly the reason I avoid soup. I fear the unknown... :P

since when has being a magician been classed as having a job ?

father: what do you want to do when you grow up son ?
son: I want to be a magician when I grow up !
father: no son, you can't do both things.
