Pronounciations

Postby jokerdan » Jun 26th, '05, 20:54

Recently, when watching Mr. Tudors sleepy Show Off Video I realised that i had been pronouncing 'Charlier' (as in the cut  ) wrong. Then, when watching Michael Ammar's Amazing Secrets of Card Magic Video, I see it pronounced another way. As I am extremely bored and still trying to get he hang of What The Hell Happenned To Sybil, i decided to write up thhis intruiging and thoughtful thread :D
My pronounciation: 'Charlie-err'
Brian Tudor's: 'Charlie-aire'
Michael Ammar's: 'Sharly-ay'
you can mix those three up and you can get loads of different pronounciations, I was just wondering which is the correct one, which I guess as Ammar's, and how other people thought it (and other sleights/ names) were pronounced before finding out they were wrong. As I always say/think, the wierder the better!

AFAIK (as far as I know ;)) the Charlier cut is a French name, hence pronounced "sharly-ay". However, Brits have a tendency to 'corrupt' French names, hence charliay and other such mispronunciations...

Agreed, that's how I've always pronounced it from originally reading it in a book but I have heard it said charli-ay and charlie-er (though the latter was by a newcomer to the art).
