Si Stebbins is good. I learned the Nikola system many years ago and never regretted it.

Can't imagine how long this would actually take!

reading about 4 or 5 stacks?

about two hours or so.

how could you decide which is the most suitable to learn without reading about what they do?

I've tried Osterlind's Breakthrough and it is very good with no discernible pattern. But it's pretty brain-bending and not worth memorising unless you're going to use it regularly. I don't and would need to keep relearning it.

If I were going to use a stack with playing cards I'd probably go with Eight Kings - but perhaps it's too well known by the lay public? A better solution for me as a mentalist is to use Sean Taylor's Symbology pack, which could be stacked in A to K order and no-one would notice.

I think Eight Kings should be fine also. Unless you expose the faces clearly any standard stack should work without detection. Also, if a layperson suspects a stack, then either the performer has made an error or they've been very unlucky in their selection of spectator!

Just a note on DAO... If you can add, subtract and remember a suit order (as you have to for Si Stebbins), you can learn DAO quickly. It's not a memorized stack like some.
