Toodle-oo - and I'm 14 now - yay!

Whenever I see someone new to cards, I always recommend Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform Card Magic. It covers everything from dealer and Biddle grips to one-handed fans and colour changes - in short, everything you need :).

Try it - for £16, you can't go wrong :D.

Kati,

How about Studio 9 in Northampton?

I used to pop over there when the cravings struck whilst at Cambrdige,

Nick J used to work there before the sale of the business a while back and I'm sure he'll be able to add more to this in due course.

Hrm...it's not really pop over, is it (Northampton is a 1 and a half hour drive, no?)

Aquarius Magic in Thetford is probably nearer you, pribably 40 minutes by car. Francis and Cheryl are both jolly nice people too.

Welcome to Tm Biggz. My only bit of advice is it does'nt matter what book or DVD you learn from as long as you practice them until they are perfect.
I started My learning with S W Erdnase "Expert at the card table" and anyone who has this will tell you it is not the easiest of reading. :?

Hello.

I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say this - DON'T RUSH INTO BUYING ROYAL ROAD.

Hi again Bigz, Gary keeps on saying this but of course this is just one view and considering that this book has been a standard since it was first published in 1949 and taking into account the fact that some people can still read this is just one view. I would say that if you're going to get into cards, RRTCM is a very challenging book which is taken time over will mean that you do the tricks, your way.

You can buy DVDs and copy the way a trick is done, learn the patter and then change your name to Daryl, Derren or Dobbin.

A note for Gary, you don't have to keep on saying this. You are one voice in a sea of experience. Say it once and leave people to make up their mind, to dialogue and to learn from it. Dogmatic pronouncements aside, I'd always have a place on my shelf for it, and Giobbi, and Hugard, Tarbell, Harbin and - the list is endless.

As Sam says - Erdnase - a tough book, but the harvest is great if you read, practice, practice some more, think about it, practice and then read and think again.

Have fun mate - even when we disagree we can agree here I hope,

Vic

Gary3911

Royal road isnt the most up-to-date book available, and could do with a few more diagrams, but it is good as a reference point, and can be used in conjuction with a DVD/video.

This is what I do.

Is this balanced enough

Oooh, I've given lots of balanced advice regarding the book. (cue vdb pout ;-) )

Like the idea of using it in conjunction with DVD material.

Gary, you're not the only one saying it! It's just that others don't issue a blanket ban on the ownership. You had me scared that you'd be round to check I didn't own one.

I know what you're trying to say, but do think it is valuable in it's own right, just think that if we're not careful we will lose all printed material in favour of the accursed DV and the 'let's copy everything bug!).

Thanks all,

Vic

The reason I say "don't rush into buying Royal Road" is exactly because I'm the only one saying it. If there were more balanced advice, I wouldn't feel the need to.

In terms of books, there is more than one way into card magic. If I didn't say anything, it seems to me that no one else would.

Your not on your own Gary I've said it many times as well, also in an attempt to stem the tide in favour of it :) In my experience most newbies that buy it regret it, although as Vic say's it is a great reference tool. It reminds me of my wire in wall finding tool, that's a cool tool too and I keep promising myself that one day I'll open it
