"magical" injury

Postby C.L.Ward » Jan 8th, '12, 19:01

After seeing what can happen when magic goes wrong i am always cautious when using objects that can cause harm during an effect....... i recently learnt a nifty little bar trick that makes a bottle explode. I work in a nightclub so have access to plenty of bottles to use.

i'd done the trick like 6 or 7 times, then i was showing it to the doormen...... and held the bottle too low down the neck....
when the bottle exploded a shard went through my right ring finger and cut through my tendons...... meaning i can no longer bend my finger and wil have to go for an operation next week to try and sort it out.

im gutted because im prodominantly right handed when handling cards.

i was just starting to get used to performing at work and was getting some really good reactions of late...... so now looks like i may have to re-learn everything with my left hand...... which is a killer blow because it will take a long time to get the confidence to perform using my left hand

anyone ever had a similar experience?? or just taken the time to learn with both??
if so was it an easy transition??

Sorry to hear about this and good luck with the Operation. About 10 years ago I almost sliced a middle finger off my Right hand. I am right handed so I was a bit upset! Without being too graphic It didn't quite slice off but was hanging by a thread. I was very quickly rushed into hospital to have plastic surgery etc on it and the finger was stitched back on and the Tendon sorted. I never really did Card tricks and still only do a few so I can't really speak about what effect this has had on my handling of cards apart from saying that I find it difficult to lift cards out from my left hand. Ten years on and the Finger is still numb and I can feel sick if I touch certain fabrics with it - a strange feeling.

As I said I tend to perform Mentalism and the last few years I have got back to doing Children's Magic so I tend to avoid Card Tricks. As I find it difficult to pick out cards using my right hand now, I don't miss it. Good luck with your Operation and I hope you get back to performing soon.

I don't really have any advice for you, but I just wanted to wish you well and comment on the bizarre irony that right now someone is asking if anyone can advise them how to do this very effect on the cheap...

I just hope they've read this post.

I was once splitting two frozen burgers at a barbecue. I held them in my hand, and drove a sharp knife through them. Unfortunately the knife split the burgers, then hit the palm of my hand, going right through and coming out the other side. I wrapped a towel around my hand and kept cooking. I never bothered to get treatment (I am a bit thick that way) but one tendon was badly damaged, and it was more than two years before I regained the use of one of the fingers.

But the good news is that the finger did eventually recover. Hope your's recovers quicker (it should, if you get treatment!)

ouch!!! best of luck with the operation. i had a close shave with a blender and ended up with nerve damage and an oddly shaped fingertip! luckily it was on my left hand and scarring was minimal. good luck again

This happened to me, except with sausages instead of burgers. I went to A&E, after I whipped together some instant noodles (after all I was hungry, that's why i was going to cook the suasages) and as far as I know it didn't hit any nerves or tendons. They put my hand through a bunch of sensitivity and motor response tests while I was there.

in hindsight I consider myself very very lucky.

thanks for the kind words guys.......... went in to the hospital today and got my appointment for my op tomorrow

tony i have to say that is literally the most manly thing ive ever heard...... not even a knife through the hand is gonna stop your BBQ'ing :P
glad it all sorted out in the end!

ive been having a play around using my left hand with cards........ gonna take some getting used to...... even if i do get movement back in my finger the rehab for it is gonna be as lengthy one apparently, so guess im just gonna have to get used to it

My poorly finger was what I would call my 'Man' finger, used for a number of different reasons   There are certain 'things' I can't bear to touch with it now so I have had to adapt in a number of unimaginable ways.

The Physio you will receive after the op will be vitally important and you will need to adhere to it. I didn't as I thought I could just carry on as normal. I had to keep my arm up for 5 weeks after the op but I didn't do this as I had to do a lot of driving Three days after, and who drives with their arm up in the air and their middle finger sticking up?

Good luck again.
