UK shells

Postby The4thCircle » Jan 16th, '12, 16:28

I recently read up on a fantastic effect using an expanded shell, and it got me wondering if there are any expanded shells out there in British currency?
I've only got the standard half dollar which is fine for the purposes of practise but it doesn't look very impromptu, and the functioning of the effect is not one which would allow the examination of an odd looking coin without breaking up the flow (for those who have the books, its an early chapter in the Art of Astonishment Volume 1 by Paul Harris. That reference shouldn't ruin the magic for anyone who has seen it performed).

Has anyone seen uk shell coinage?

There are some based on the £2 coin:

and on the 2p coin:

and quite a few based on Euro coins.

I got mine from Keith Bennet. It's not even close to anything by Schoolcraft or Lassen, but it does the job.

In my experience the 2p ones a a bit better since they sit flush with the bottom of the coin ( or at least my one does ). My £2 shell has a noticeable rim when mounted.

I have no idea who made the ones I have either, all bought second hand.

Stacy, can I ask what effect ou saw that piqued your interest? I only use mine for Daniel Garcia's Personal Safe, a coins across ( the only coin trick I do)

Light & Heavy Dime was the original name, though obviously I want to do it with English currency.

I like the idea of using a £2 coin as the premise of putting two pounds of extra weight into a penny, rendering it immovable.

I like to perform tricks for my parents when we go on holiday and I like the idea of leaving the coin somewhere along the grand union canal this September.

I have a half dollar shell for coin manipulation routines, but with this effect the shell coin is meant to be incidental, meaning it has to be above scrutiny. I want all the heat to be on the genuine coin.

No one notices. I do coins across *all* the time and no one has ever ever ever seen it.
