Royal Road book. A quick question

Postby Daza XIII » Jun 28th, '05, 11:04

As you may or may not know I’ve been practising my coin work for the last six months or so and as everything is progressing well on that front I thought I’d expand my repertoire and have recently invested in a shiny new copy of the Royal Road to Card Magic.
At the start the book suggests going through it chapter by chapter and taking the time to learn each section without skipping ahead. From my experiences with learning coin magic from Bobo though, whilst his book is a great resource it didn’t seem to follow much of a logical sequence to me.
So, as I want to get the most out of it, I was wondering for those of you who have read the Royal Road, is this sound advice to work through it page by page or doesn’t it make much of a difference really.
Thanks in advance.

I have deleted all content of my posts to prevent further moderator tampering, with the exception of locked topics, where moderators have altered content then quickly locked them to prevent right of reply - especially after long sections of personalised insults from said moderators. (yadda, yadda, blah, blah, blah)

Nice try Gary, now the truth:

Gary has carried on a crusade of insults and aggravation since he was advised that swapping a book wasn't allowed on TM. This continues even to this day even though he has declared himself in exile over at another Forum (so why does he keep coming back here?) where they are similarly cheesed off with his over inflated ego and have also locked posts where he's shown his true self. He has stooped as low as posting the same inaccurate message attacking and insulting another member in several places here (all deleted, of course) and, despite his assurances on the other Forum that he is interested in helping youngsters, has callously insulted a young magician here on TM who had the temerity to disagree with something Gary had said.

We are so very glad that Gary is deleting his posts as they didn't amount to a hill of beans anyway and the locked ones were locked simply to prevent any further venom from him. This is, unfortunately, what Moderators have to do on occasions. None of the messages referred to have been edited or tampered with - there's simply no point. If anyone has been editing then just look at the lower part of this message box and see how many times Gary has edited - a bit of a clue there perhaps? Also, there have been absolutely no personal insults in his direction at all, if so Gary would have posted examples. Instead, he prefers untruths and bluster. Please carry on deleting mate as it saves us the job!

Just part of the very helpful and satisfying Talkmagic.co.uk experience - especially for you Gary!

I began with Royal Road. Good book and it gave me the good basic knowlege of card handling etc. Answering your question, it is good to follow the book in sequence from start to finish however the 'pass' comes in quickly and that is a hard move to do it right.

Personally I think it would have been better to get a DVD, as it could teach you everything in Royal ROad but using video as a teaching method instead of a few diagrams and alot of text!

Good luck anyway

I bought Royal Road first and working through it, bit by bit, and it worked for me. Granted, I didn't know all the sleights immediately, but after a few months of reading it through, putting it down for a couple weeks then going back to it, it worked.

But, as Gary and others tell us, it might not be the best way - but it was the way I did it.

"...and more, much more than this, I did it my way."
