The Lee Smith Lecture. H.C.M.S 19/01/2012

Postby daleshrimpton » Jan 20th, '12, 13:23

Last night, saw me making my monthly visit the home counties magic club, for my regular injection of inspiration.
( yes, believe it or not even i sometimes need one  )
Our guest for the night was Lee Smith, who as you know is not only a brilliant thinker, and performer, but a very nice guy.
His lecture didnt have any particular formal structure, instead Lee opts for the casual aproach, tayloring his evening to suit the mood of the room.
This is an excelent way to give a talk, because it means little or nothing will go over the audiences heads, and it gives the evening a sharing feeling, rather than a dealer dem.
And what an array of ideas and notions Lee shared with us. Not just tricks either.
he explained in detail how he aproaches a group, and interacts with them straight away . In effect not giving them the chance to say.. "Sorry mate, I dont want to see card tricks".
his touches with Marlo's twirl colour change.. ( Yes Lee, It's marlo. you did ask :) ) were greatly apreceated, along with advice on one handed top palm, erdnase colour change, and the d/under cut card control.

Breaking away from Cards , he then explained his thoughts on the ring on band. I suspect that many will be using this.
The one comment i heard from many of those that were there, is the sheer volume of magic Lee manages to cram into an evening, and that all that magic is fully explained, and very easy to understand.

We also got to see Strike 2, his version of the colour change knives, bought up to date by using disposable lighters.

Simple in execution, and perfect for those who like doing magic down the pub, or who frequent night clubs because it's visual, and easy to follow.
More cards followed, including his see saw peek.. such a usefull thing for walkaround, and Cabaret! ...then sadly, the official part of the evening came to a close.
Lee then joined us in teh legion next door, and continued with some nice string effects, as well as billet work, and a new virtualy self working coin effect that will be coming out soon... That i guarentee you will get when you see it.

( indeed i should add here, that 90% of Lee's card work, uses the 3 basic, easy to master sleights, and no tricky moves.)

Being a full time worker, Lee doesnt lecture that much. So if he does happen to be in your area, grab the opertunity and see him .
You will not regret it i promise.

Sounds like you had a brilliant evening dales.
I would love to come along to one of these meetings.

I'm a Leeds lad, so if anyone knows of any up, & coming event like this, I'll do my best to come along.
It would be good to meet a real pro like Lee in the flesh.

Thank you Dale for taking the time to write such a lovely review.

I am so pleased everyone enjoyed it. I had some really nice emails this morning from some of the members. What a lovely club you have. It was great to see you and Mike Stoner as well.

I really hope to come back and do another in the future.

Many thanks again.

Lee. :D

Gutted I couldn't make it last night Lee, glad it went well mate, and the H.C.M.S. is such a great club.

If you get the chance to see Lee do Strike 2 live you're in for a really magical experience, just two lighters yet so stunning to watch!
