Actually it wasn't clear what you were after at all, as is quite obvious from the range of answers. So rather than bitch about us all, why not clarify your thoughts and come back to us?

I've got the answer that I was after so there's no need for this thread to be open anymore, and regardless of my question, your answer was rude and uncalled for.

Let's just leave this thread be now shall we as Jing has given a saficiant answer.

Now, now, gents - time to just smile, shrug and drop the hostilities, yes? :D

In terms of the thread, other members may well want to discuss this very topic, or comment upon the effects mentioned etc., so it would actually be more useful to the community to leave it open for discussion (so long as it's polite discussion  )

That's fine by me, after all I wanted reasonable answers to begin with. I'll just be leaving this thread to it's own devices now.

To keep with the nitpicking, because I love it when somebody posts a question and then bitches about the answers. It is a public forum, you post, you get responses. Choose the ones you like, ignore the rest. But whatever.

In any case. I've been reading some of the answers, and when it comes to plots there really are only a few as I stated earlier.

As examples:

Cards Across and Dealing Four of the same cards both fall into the Assembly plot. The majority of Gambling routines are assemblies because the targeted cards end up together.

Card To Pocket, Card Under Glass, Card to Wallet...card to wherever all fall under the Card to Impossible location Plot.

Cards changing colour, Size, or from one card to another is a transformation Plot.

One can argue that Monte's and Ambitious Card's can fall into the same plot because in both cases the cards simply move to a desired location in the deck, doesn't matter if its 2 cards or 52. But with so many monte's out there it is easier to give them their own classification.

Ambitious Card, because of the variety of possibilites and endings can fall into all catagories, you throw in a reversal, an impossible location, a restoration. It is why I love the effect.

Any sandwich effect can be considered the basic pick a card routine but can also slide into an impossible location routine. Although there are so many sandwhich effects that it is easier to put them into their own plot.

In the entirety of magic there are only a handful of 'plots' I can never remember them but think about it.

You can:
Vanish and appear
Transform
Penetrate
Levitate
Restore (usually goes hand in hand with destroy)
Predict (now don't bother telling me that a prediction is mentalism, because in my book mentalism is a magic trick presented differently)
Change Location, which can be argued to be a vanish and a re-appearance.

And there may be one or two more. The point being there are many variations on theme but only a few theme's.

Still not convinced? Try to name magic plots without using the name of an effect. Then takes those plots and take a good hard look and you will probably realize that many of them, fit into the same catagories.

I'd imagine we can can continue to have useful discussions around the topic of this thread, without continuing to refer to such as 'nitpicking', which is only going to raise heckles/hackles/sheckles etc.?

As I said above, it's a very useful thread, and it'd be a great shame to see it locked or edited

It's getting very close to that situation.

We all have differing and solidly held, equally valid opinions - perhaps we could just learn from them?
