I know you say no projector, but with back lighting you can make some materials change from opaque to see-through.
A bit like the 'dream scene' in theatrical productions where the actors behind the screen can suddenly be seen when the lights are turned up behind the screen.
Perhaps experiment with different grades of net curtain and front and rear lighting.
or smoked/mirrored glass with front and rear lighting.
Another possibility is to use a grid where the second image is behind the first, but a slight sideways movement of the second image makes it visible in the tiny gaps between the first.
if that works you could wow the whole audience !
There are even some ways of getting moving images using this technique.
