What is peoples opinions of being taught card slights from a magician that teaches to learning via books and dvds

It would be the ideal, presuming he was any good and a reasonable teacher. Unfortunately most of us don't get that oportunity.

A bit of punctuation missing in the original post, but a few re-reads and I think I've figured it out.

I think George is asking what people's opinions are concerning either being taught by a magician personally ("a magician that teaches") or by learning from DVDs and books.

In answer to the question, I reckon it's got to be better to learn from a magician, if you have access to one - after all, you can't interact with a DVD or book.

Not in our world, anyway...

Given the option, I'd go for a teacher.

Books can go into great details about how a trick is done but it can be difficult to figure out what's happenning in between the pictures (assuming there are illustrations).

Videos/DVDs are great as you can slow them down and get a good look at what's going on but normally you only get only one (if you're lucky, two) views.

However, sitting in front of an expert -

You can get the trick repeated as often as required
You get to see it from all angles
You can ask questions

But best of all,

You can practice the trick yourself and get feedback.

Its gotta be the personal touch - but how many of us can afford such a luxury, so its the old and new technology for us.

Which is one reason why joining a magic society can be so benificial. In my experience (and I appreciate that this may not be the experience of everyone), the "more experinced" members of my local society are more than willing to help anyone asking.

I detect a bias towards being taught in person... And rightly so. This has so many benefits compared to a DVD/VCR. They have been listed, but what the heck?

-Get to ask the magician questions.
-Can have feedback from teacher.
-Can have it repeated over and over, from different angles, and you can see it in three dimensions, which certainly helps.

All in all the worlds all just a brick in a wall. Wait, no. All in all, being personally taught is better. Hope this has helped!

Thanks for all the great advice it's just that i have been more into Hypnosis these past 8 years and card magic was just a second hobby.

This past year I have been more and more into card tricks and I have been offered tuition and I think I will be going down the one to one route.

Learning from someone in person is far better than any DVD or book.

I was having trouble with the EC and have spent 30 mins with colleague who said I was going to fast and gave a few other little pointers and now its coming together nicely.

No DVD or book can tell you that.

I would also like to point out the posts regarding EC on this forum were very usefull aswell.

No... my colleague would not just give anything away. He never tells anyone at work he does magic.....he lets others he has shown tricks to (out side of work) do all the talking. Very clever man.

I have to go away and find things out for myself and if he sees me really struggling he will lend that helping hand which is needed to just polish it up nicely.

Nearly everyone at work knows that I do magic - they just don't know how I do it!. They go out and tell others, and there are many more outside of the office than inside , who then make contact and bookings.
