Hey guys. I was wondering what you guys believe is the best vanish out there. It could be the vanishing of a sponge ball, a coin, a card, whatever. But really only small scale stuff (I don't have any tanks that I could vanish at the moment).

I already know the Revolution vanish, and I think it's a very nifty little vanish, and the Throw Vanish which is unbelievable but also quite angle sensitive.

Any other small scale vanishes you guys know of? Any sources you could recommend? (I have already flipped through J.B. Bobos Modern Coin Magic)

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and hope you can help. Have fun!

Well, a false transfer can be impressive in the right hands but I think the Raven is probably the best vanish you can do:

- borrowed coin

- in spectator's hand

- you are CLEAN at the end

I spose so. But the Raven is just so gimmicked. If I were trying for un-gimmicked tricks, what would I be looking at???

Not sure really - you'd have to ask a coin guy for that...

Haha, maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. It can be any small scale vanish. Coins, cards, guitar picks, sponge balls... The list goes on!

For vanishes I normally use a TT. Surely, it's a gimmick, but if you use it properly, you'll be the only one to know it. So who cares. And there are plenty of vanishes possible with a TT that look impossible.

On a side note, I do not understand why some magicians don't like gimmicks. Isn't it the effect that matters and not the method?

I counselled a man who spent so much money on magic that his wife walked out on him three years ago and he hasn't seen her since.

This might be considered the ultimate magical vanish perhaps

True, it is the effect that matters, however, if you rely on gimmicks then you must have them with you to be able to perform, you can't work entirely unprepared. For most this is unlikely to be a problem since every magician I know wonders around with pockets full the whole time (ok, quick poll, who has what on them right now? I only have a pack of bikes and two rubber bands at the moment) but occasionally you may have left the house in a hurry and have put on the wrong jacket, if someone askes you to perform now it would be handy to be able to do something that doesn't need gimmicks.

Gimmicks are great things but if you want a backup plan then be sure to know at least a few ungimmicked effects.

I fully agree. I do not advocate relying on gimmickes alone. In fact, I've been trying to completely concentrate on sleight-of-hand magic recently. It's just that from time to time you hear: what? gimmicks? no, not for me, I don't like them.

Two decks of bikes in my back bag (which can be considered to be my biggest pocket - it's always with me ), two TTs, a silk, a cord and a few coins (half dollar, dollar and two English pennies) in my hip pockets, and two rubber bands on my wrists.

best vanising trick is one i came up with, im not going to tell you as that would give the secret but its basicly making the audience disapeer, and you thought it was impossible.

Out of curiosity, how much would a TT Gimmick set me back. I live in Australia, so yeah, anyone know?

PS not sure if this is still an option but I was in your neck of the woods four years ago or so and I found a beaut little magic shop in Melbourne quite by accident. It was called Bernards Magic Shop and the address was 211 Elizabeth Street, Melborne, Tel: (03)9670 9270, Fax: (03) 9600 4545 (I still have the carrier bag from there with all the details on!). If I remember right it was next door to a large camera/electronics shop.

Of course, it may not still be there but a search on the name might show if they're still active anywhere else locally.
