Appearing as a guest on Radio?

Postby Danny Joseph » Feb 3rd, '12, 17:46

Hey Everybody,

I've been invited onto North Manchester FM as a guest to talk about magic, my aims, and how it all came about; as well as to film some tricks in the studio.

I have never done anything like this before, and am looking for some good general advice?

Thanks all!
Dan

Talk to presenter who is in the studio with you, not the audience in general. That is, have a personal conversation. It's as simple as that just have a normal conversation & relax.
The average commercial radio listener, only listens for a few minutes at a time, most for less than 30 minutes per day & then whilst doing other things, so you have nothing to be nervous or worry about. Your audience are the people in the studio with you, others are just listening in..

Ideal opportunity for a sealed envelope prediction routine?

Dr Todd has guested on radio (and TV!) shows in the past and may be able to offer a few tips.

Make sure you have some material ready to use as this will surely come up in conversation.

I would suggest demonstrating how suggestion works. I know a 'guess a number' routine that will hit on about 90% of the listeners. You could suggest they phone in when it works on them. This would prolong your presence on the station also.

If this sounds good to you, PM me and I'll share the good stuff. Very simple yet effective. :D

Just had another idea! Take an ID with you but prior to your interview, email the presenter and ask him/her to think of one single card prior to your arrival. I think you know where this is going! :D

look at a book called "Verbal Magic" by Juan Tamariz, full of effects where its all done verbally, i've not read the whole book, but there are some really fantastic card tricks that would work over the radio (all of the tricks in the book were used by Juan in his radio show)

This might sound strange, but some really visual stuff is maybe worth thinking about too. Something the people in the studio can have big reactions to. That could come across better than trying to do anything too naff...

There use to be a radio Ventriloquist!!!!! It was only when he tried to transfer to TV that his career failed, as people started to see how bad he was.
Radio is an amazing medium, you can do things on radio that no other medium would allow. Think about it. Other mediums have an audience that sit there saying so go on then ENTERTAIN me. Radio is used is a completely different manner. 90% of it's audience are doing other things & have it there as company.
Unlike TV the audience do not tune away during adverts. They do not decide to take a toilet break or go to the bar if it's not totally entertaining to them. They continue to do what they are doing with the radio on...It really is very unique.
Radio is also far more two way, than ever TV can be. I have been involved in many different types of radio down the years, some legal, some not. On some I have done programming on many engineering & even where all I have done is in the background, I have always received letters & at times those letters have come from people way outside of the area the transmitters have reached.

If you're answering a question, answer in short 'bite-size' segments, rather than a long winded answer.
