in china ,it is said that the time of the pass has passed.what do you think about it? do you practise the pass? how long have you pratised? do you have any tips to do it well? do you still usually use the pass in your card magic now?
for me ,i still practise the pass ,but i usually use false cut in my card trick now.

"the pass" actualy is a great visual basic to have but i belive false cut and other methods are better if u want to get the card to the top early on in the trick

I have been doing card magic for quite long, and to be honest, I barely use the pass. I agree that a perfect pass, is quite invisible and a killer move to do, to get you out of a situation, where you need to control a card, but again, a bad pass (which most passes are), is really a bad thing to perform. If you want to use the pass, and really need it, practice it each and every day. A pass is hard to do good, and it requires 100% focus and practice. For me, a pass, is a slow, invisible move, that no one ask any question about. Most passes out there look strange and any layman should think that the move is sceptical.

When i was learning the pass, i found it very very hard, then i discovered how to relax my hands and not try to it as fast as i can, so just practise slowly doing the pass, making sure you get everything right, and speed will come in time.

Hope this helped someone...

From my working performances, i can honestly say that i have never used a pass, and if a pass may have been nescessary, i would just cut the pack on the off beat.

In my opinion, magic is a difficult enough job as it is, because as any working magician will say, theres lots of aspects in entertaining people. I think that provided you have a good patter that gets the misdirection (through laughter for example) then you can get away with anything.

Just my thoughts on it, but i do still like the pass, but would never use it professionally.

Mark

I do use the pass for a simple control, but only when I think it's the right situation. I can do a Classic pass in mebbe a second or two, so if my "can you remember your card?" misdirection works, I'll do a slow pass.

Has anyone here seen the Cover pass? It's bl**dy brilliant! It is actually invisible, even in slow motion. The lower hand twitches and that's it. It relies on a Classic pass but under a brilliant cover - if that's not too revealing.

I've got Richard Kaufman's On The Pass DVD and i love watching it :P It has the cover pass on there. Looks too hard for me right now :P

I love trying to do a pass, I'm just trying to do the classic pass at the moment , but i can hardly do it slowly :P Still, it should come in time.

I've got On the Pass with Richard Kaufman DVD and it's a whole dvd dedicated to doing various passes. This shows and teaches you the cover pass. The contents of this dvd is:

Techniques taught:

* The Classic Pass
* The Riffle Pass
* The Jiggle Pass
* Half A Jiggle Pass
* Classic Pass False Cut
* The Cover Pass
* Herrmann Pass
* Merlin's Herrmann
* Turnover Pass
* Jacob Daley's Improved Herrmann Pass,
* The Double-Lift Shift
* Steve Draun's Midnight Shift
* The Half Pass and much more!

Routines taught:

* False-Cut Ace Cutting
* A Biddling Vanish
* Every Every Where
* New Cavorting Aces
* Passing Along The Vanishing Aces

And there's another DVD called The PASS with Randy Wakeman which I don't have, and I cant find a list of the contents of that dvd :-(

There will be books teaching the cover pass I'm sure, but I don't have any so can't help you there :)

Yes...I got the cover pass from On the Pass too.

It's hard to do but I think with practice I might be able to.

The hardest part is the first bit - after that it's just a normal classic pass.

I used to think I'd never be using the pass in my magic, as there are so many ways to control your card to the top by simpler sleights. But recently I've started having second thoughts. No need to say that, when perfomed smoothly, the pass gives much less suspicion (or no suspicion whatsoever) to the spec than other methods. A couple of my friends know about bringing a selected card to the top of the deck in many card tricks, and although they don't exactly know how I do it when I execute, say, the o******d s*****e control, they still suspect that the card has been controlled. But the pass achieves the same through apparently no action at all, hence no suspicion.

I've tried two passes, the classic pass and turnover pass. The latter seemed easier to me, so now I am really determined to perfect it and start using it when I have.

I think Richard Kaufman said nicely that Classic Pass has to be practised 100 times a day for a whole year and THEN it starts to look like pure magic...When you see him perform The Classic Pass you'll be amazed...I know I was... :shock:
