Street magic potential?

Postby daxi » Feb 23rd, '12, 10:21

I have just spotted this on ebay & it looks to have some potential for street use. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clone-Copy-Remote-Handset-Car-Alarms-Gates-433MHz-/270912367558?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item3f13a2abc6
All car remotes (central locking, alarms & immobilisers) work on 433.920 MHz & are very prone to over loading due to stronger signals on close by frequencies & obviously on the same frequency, which others are legally licensed to use.
This is caused by car manufacturers using cheap & poorly designed equipment in a very busy & stupid part of the spectrum & then compounding that stupidity by placing the remotes in the middle of the amateur radio 70cm band & in a part that is possibly busier than most...The digital section.
70cm is a band that is shared with the military, it is also next to a band used by Police radio repeaters & others. This means any radio operating even close to the same frequency as the car fob, overloads the systems receiver & stops the key fob from working. Hence the known problems in some areas of people being locked out of their cars.

This key fob however does not simply overload the RX with a stronger signal it duplicates it & that opens up some interesting opportunities, especially when it comes to automatic doors etc which have no safety measures in place to stop them being activated & with cars, it may not open them, but it will jam if it's closer to the car than the owners.

You would be surprised just how many automatic gates etc are controlled by a simple tone send by a radio wave.
Do you think it would impress, if for example someone gained access to a high security area? What about an area where it is a criminal offence to even enter unauthorised? The particular gate I'm thinking of does not work on 433Mhz, but all anyone would need to open it, is available for about £35 off ebay.
Most garage door, automatic front gates etc work on 433.920MHz, as do many in locations where site security would probably deny your ability to gain access, or stop them from doing so, but you could.
What about if someone could stop you or anyone else from gaining access to their own car without setting the alarm off & do it at will? Or if someone had the ability to hold your (or anyone else's) car key fob & drain it's life temporarily? Choose anyone in any car park & be able to absorb their key rings power.

Might be something you can do to impress friends or have Blaine do on TV, but I don't see how it could be a practical tool in a street show.

I'm sure that if someone gained access to a "high security area", the judge would be very inpressed...

Absolutely & the reason I'm not giving details here is because, this entrance does pose a very real terrorist threat. However it also shows how ignorant people are about security & potential risks when it comes to radio.
The frequency to that entrance was grabbed using a scanner, whilst sitting in a close by bar. Bear in mind that to open the entrance a button was pressed for a few seconds only & that was sufficient to grab it & the code needed. This could easily be done any where that such a system is used.

Street magic potential?
The vanishing magician who disappears into a car with blue flashing lights.

Some people just astonish me....

Agree with Freddie - I don't see anything magical here at all. Just plain stupidity.
