Bradley here

Postby magician242 » Feb 19th, '12, 16:03

Hi I am a semi professional magician and I am 15 years old. I love close up and unique card effects. Some of my best/favourite tricks include: transcendence, chop suey, ID, card to mouth, card to sharpie, tagged and vanishing candle. I own a series of jay sankey dvds and a several trick decks, dan and dave's trilogy, and then some and a few jordan johnson dvds.

Thats me!

I would appreciate any trick recommendationsor tips. Also if someone could explain to me what CUPS are I would be very grateful, I think it is something to do with magic budget?

Brad.

Welcome to TM. CUPS is when magicians spend money on props and tricks they do not really need but cannot help it!

Haha I get that except I do need these tricks. I guess with all the great tricks out there its hard to choose. What exactly does it stand for?

It becomes worse if you get into paranormal entertainment. Then the CUPS can run into ££££

Haha thanks guys I can tell I'm going to love it here. Although my dad purchases all my magic for me from his account and I pay him so he the strict monitor of my CUPS. Also I think you will know what I mean when I say magic can be slightly misleading in description and you think your getting the greatest trick in the world but it doesnt turn out very good at all. For example recently I bought transcendence thinking that I was getting a gimmicked coin but i only got a dvd and an ingredient that I already have. Although i was able to improvise with the gimmicked coin but the gimmicked coin that I have will only work with quarters and 10p coins not half dollers like the gimmick, which kind of ruins the clean up taught on the dvd. So do you have any solid real world close up workers that you can recommend or any I should steer clear of to save money. I was looking at a card to wallet effect, maybe wormhole or any card to any spectators wallet. Also I was looking at spike or a switcher effect like switchblade or switcher by richard james. Any feedback?

Hi Bradley welcome to the forum.

Tricks/illusions/gimmicks are like anything else you buy. The people selling them want to promote there very best qualities and in doing so aren't likely to tell you anything that might sound negative and sometimes they get a bit carried away and, lets say "exaggerate"
The best thing you can do is to read the review section on this forum and see what others are saying.
Also don't worry about doing an effect just the way it was shown. Think about about what else you can do with the information, how you can develop it into your own illusion or style. this is the only way for magic to evolve and remain interesting

I can only pass on the advice I was given when I was young.Buy books not tricks. Basic books, that have stood the test of time are:-
'Royal Road to Card Magic', 'Modern Coin Magic' and maybe 'Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks for Magicians'. After that, or maybe at the same time, read 'The Art of Coarse Acting', light reading but very informative; or join a good amateur drama group, if there is one in your area. Meantime welcome to Talk Magic.

Hello Brad,

What a great age to begin your magic journey.
Wish I had started earlier.
I might have been half decent by now.
