It has taken me a quite a while to introduce myself. I don''t know why, I am not usually the shy and retiring type. maybe its because, at my age, there is a lot of biography. Too much to cover quickly.
Quick pen sketch: I developed an interest in magic when my grocer told me my change was already in the sealed bag of sugar I had bought. He showed me a coin trick and a couple of moves with thimbles. It was many years later, when I bought some thimbles, from Davenports, that I found out how famous, and revered John Ramsay was. I was about ten or 11 then. I am 77 now, and a lot of water has run under a lot of bridges in the interim.
It is the usual story. At different parts of my life I practiced my magic and at other I did other things like amateur dramatics and sometimes I combined the two. I was a member of the IBM and an officer in the RAF when I joined members of the Singapore Ring of the IBM in their production of Magicana 1965 at the Victoria Theatre.
After leaving the RAF looking after 3 children on my own ,and educating them took up all my time. I rejoined the IBM in 2002 and have just received my Wizard Award badge.
I consider myself a 'skilled amateur' even though I have always charged if I did a gig for anyone. I don't beieve in working for nothing at the expense of a professional, so I charge a reasonable fee and donate the amount to charity, a practice I developed as a member of the RAF, where I was not alowed to work privately.
This is my first forum and I hope to contribute what I can.
