Is there a source for no-copyright videos? Not Magic related

Postby nickmadsen » Mar 1st, '12, 10:27

Hi fellow Magicians!

Along with my life as an "occasionally payed" performer, I also have a great interest in composing and recording my own music. And over the years I've recorded quite a few songs, some good, some better, some not so good :D

But I have been thinking if there is any place online where people share their non copyright video? which I could use to make my own video? It could be anything from small random clips, or small sketches and so forth...

Or perhaps anyone here on TM have an interest in making short films? and would be willing to get some music to hers/his videos?

Thanks in advance.

You generally have to pay for decent quality and royalty free stuff though.

Try Googling "royalty free multimedia" for various options.

Thanks you for your answer. This might be a stupid question, but english is not my first language, and I don't want to end up in trouble. Can you tell me the difference between royalty free and non copyrighted material? I've looked around, but I don't know what to "believe".
Is one of them buying the rights to do whatever you want to? And the other is buying them for a single purpose only?

And thanks for your link, and I guess you're right, it's quite hard to find quality material without paying for it, which kind of makes sense :)

I'm not 100% sure on the precise difference, maybe the guys that publish their own work might have a better idea. I know that royalty free material is re-used in the kinds of projects you're talking about though (within the terms of its usage agreement).

Allright, but thank you anyway. I think I'm gonna find some video forum and ask them, and maybe I'm lucky o find someone who needs good music for his videos :)

Have a great weekend!

Non copyright material is public domain so is free to use for anyone, royalty free is slightly different in that you'll usually pay an initial fee for the material but after that you're free to use it how you like with no need to pay a royalty to the creator.

Thanks for your help both of you.

You can really make some weird videos with what you find online, I mean there is so many creepy/nonrealistic videos trying to portrait realistic situations, it's quite entertaining actually :)

Do you know about Creative Commons?

It's basically a new approach to copyright.

http://creativecommons.org/about" target="_blank

There are various licenses, here's one as an example:

Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 Generic

You are free:

to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work
to Remix — to adapt the work
to make commercial use of the work
Under the following conditions:

Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
Share Alike — If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

Many creative people: musicians, film-makers, designers and artists, are releasing their work under similar licenses nowadays - enabling other creative types to recycle, mash-up or otherwise use their work under the conditions they provide.

Sources of Creative Commons media include:

Internet Archive

Our Media

Spin Xpress

NB: A CC license does not mean you are free to use the material as you wish. However, as with the example above, all licenses are written in plain English, which makes it pretty clear what you can do and what is expected of you in return. Be sure to check the license details before use.

Oddly enough, Paul Brook (yeah, the mentalist) has a site of some reasonable quality HD Videos that you can use royalty-free for no charge, I think he requires a credit. Have a look for his YT account

If you are looking for music you can use I believe Jay Scott Berry created some music CD's for magicians that you can manipulate the music to suit your needs. I don't know all the details but you can always send him an email on the subject.

The Internet Moving Image Archive is a good source of old films that have fallen out of copyright.

It may sound strange, but eBay is a good source for CDs of royalty-free music. I have a nice little library of royalty-free CDs, all of which I've bought (directly from the original copyright holders) via eBay.

Google "royalty-free music" to find any number of suppliers where you can buy individual tracks.
