Marco Tempest - Open Sorcerer

Postby Tomo » Mar 23rd, '12, 11:00

Hmmm. I'm not sure how to think about this. On one hand, he's producing some cool, high tech illusions, but on the other he wants to give away the secret: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17478070

It's certainly good stuff but IMHO it's not magic. It's using latest technology in a very interesting and entertaining way but that already happens in film and TV production. Marco used to do 'normal' magic/street magic stuff but he seems to have moved on to something high tech and, to the average eejit like me, way beyond the reach of the ordinary mortal. He ‘interacts’ with his electronic creations which is what sets him apart from the unseen talented techies who make dinosaurs come to life and Titanic sail again on screen so it’s certainly entertaining up to a point. I wouldn’t pay to see this stuff but I’d pay to see him do magic!

I think you're right. He's more an artist or digital entertainer than magician or illusionist. The says that his intention is to hold an audience's sense of wonder, and I'm sure he does that. What's perhaps interesting is that his approach to entertainment has evolved to become his own. Maybe it's proof of the old maxim that it's not what you do on stage but how you do it that's important.

I can't see him fooling Penn and Teller, though :D

Interesting stuff and fascinating to watch. I am certainly not worried about his exposure as I feel everyone knows this is technology anyway - and yet it is still entertaining and a joy to watch. Is it magic? It is an illusion, but I don't think all illusions have to be magic. Personaly I don't think it is magic, but that is just a catagory - and certainly doesn't diminish what he is doing.
