The Subconscious

Postby MatCult » Mar 13th, '12, 14:21

Just a heads-up for those in the UK, BBC2 at 9pm tonight has this:

Out of Control?

We all like to think we are in control of our lives - of what we feel and what we think. But scientists are now discovering this is often simply an illusion.

Surprising experiments are revealing that what you think you do and what you actually do can be very different. Your unconscious mind is often calling the shots, influencing the decisions you make, from what you eat to who you fall in love with. If you think you are really in control of your life, you may have to think again.

Could be worth a watch for the mentals among you...

Typicaly BBC, there's hardly ever anything on I want to watch and then they go and put this on at the same time as the final of Masterchef! :(

It still beats me why so many people don't even realise they have a subconscious mind, let alone ever try making contact :?

Watched this last night - very disappointing. It merely reinforced my negative opinion of experimental psychology - if you can't measure it, it's not scientific so we'll ignore it. They may have some idea of how the brain works but this tells you nothing about "the mind" in general or the unconscious mind in particular. To do that you need to use introspection, excluded from academic psychology for over a hundred years. I learnt more about the workings of the human mind in a one-week NLP course than I did in a three-year psychology degree.

And how can you produce a documentary on "the unconscious" without even mentioning Freud or Jung?

They kept mixing up the brain with the subconscious. How can you have a discussion about blindsight without mentioning that the visual cortex is at the back and the information it receives is augmented along its journey from the retina?

Tomo, I couldn't agree more, in fact, i get defensive when people deny the existence of the subconscious and if your anything like me, its- 8 out of 10 times in my presentation, that I explain with real life examples (like any psychologist) how it works, even help them realise when was the last time it made a split decision for them (like when you go * because you heard the bathroom door shut-- a low FSG cue- might I add), it works, EVERYBODY should try it. If its you're a mentalist, of course.

I was "inspired" (or more probably the opposite - "expired"?) by this programme to write a blog on the subject - you can read it here:

An interesting read.

I think it's very important to make friends with your subconscious and to take notice of the stuff that bubbles up. Not in a hippy trippy way, but because it's as much "you" as much as your conscious mind is. What bubbles up is communication. Like Barry says, that communication comes in the form of feelings and impressions. There's a great problem solving mechanism down there, plus a lot that needs sorting through and agreeing that you either need more of or can do without. OK, that sounds a bit hippy trippy now I come to read it back.

My panic attacks stopped completely when I started listening to the worries my subconscious has about things instead of ignoring them. That was back in 2004. A little later, subconscious and I brokered a deal between ourselves whereby we both know a migraine is happening, so it's not really necessary to let the cerebral discomfort to bubble to the surface unless something weird happens. It's not hypnosis, it's just getting the bigger "you" on board. Get that agreement and you can do anything. Try to force change on your subconscious, and you'll fail, as I keep telling people who say they want to lose weight/stop smoking/etc. If the need for change doesn't come from within, you'll always fail.

Absolutely. I always tell prospective clients that hypnotherapy is a partnership between us and I can't make them do anything. We often need to talk to "parts" of the unconscious mind to ensure that all parts are in agreement.

I've used the same technique as described in Paul Voodini's Midnight Side of the Mind for many years to deal with simple things like 'stress' headaches, muscle aches etc rather than take pills or potions. In a slightly different way I used the technique to help quit smoking some years ago. It's a bit like self hypnoisis (which may, or may not, exist  ) but it works. For me anyway. I'm very happy with the inner 'me' and we have a good understanding - most of the time.

See now, I don't want contact with my subconscious mind. I'm thinking I'm not going to like what it is going to say. I don't like what my conscious mind has to say. And the voices in my head speak a language I don't even understand, (I think it is Tagalog but I'm not sure). Often I have headaches due to this. So no, allow my mind to sleep, or at least be unrecognized, it is safer for the world at large, or small.
