Tips/Constructive Criticism on this video? :)

Postby Danny Jay » Feb 20th, '12, 18:41

Hello forum :)

I've always been taught to look back on my own performances and review what I can improve on. However I rarely get the chance. But in town the other day I was improvising magic on the spot for some friends I had just met, and the cameras out and recording! So I'm hoping to see if any of you guys have any pointers or advice you could give me :)

It is a good performance with good connection with your spectators. Nicely done. It was a pity it seemed to be shot through a slit (or maybe that was my computer). I only could see a strip in the middle, so missed your face and their reactions. But the moves were smoothly done, and the patter equally confident.

Well done.

What was really good was the way you tailored the performance to the spectator's reactions. Once he started rubbing the back of the card, you picked up on that and built it into your performance. This comes with a good understanding of what is possible with the techniques.

Some performers simply memorise a routine and perform it AT an audience. They cannot handle interrupts or ad-libs.
You have learned the techniques and understand what is acheivable, so you perform WITH an audience.

Top stuff!

I have to agree with the above! A lovely change with very nice audience interaction, and you adjusted the routine well... you pay attention to your spectators!

I thought it was really good, I loved the way your friend was trying to find the gimmick in the card you handed him. I can't criticise anything, except to maybe leave a bit more time between tricks to let it sink in a bit? But that might be the worst advice possible...

I agree that it was a very polished and confident performance. Personally I would slow everything down a little and take a bit more time to build up suspense through each effect up to the climax. I also think going a bit slower would help to make the routine easier to follow and therefore enhance the magic. Having said that, though, I feel I must congratulate you on your faultless sleight of hand and on your excellent audience interaction. Very well done.

Very nice. I guess the only criticism from a theoretical point of view is that is was maybe a bit repetitive, and perhaps could have been built into more of a structured routine. It kind of became a collection of sleight-of-hand demonstrations, rather than becoming more and more interesting and leading to a climax.

That said, the spectators enjoyed it so that's what counts. Your performance of the moves and things were very good, well done.

You obviously can perform well and connect well with your audience. The only points I would suggest you worked on was speed you could improve by slowing down and giving people a chance to follow what is going on. Just trying to talk a little slower would improve your delivery. You sounded a bit unnatural, like a magician on speed . Also try adding a bit more variety into your routine. Overall though a good piece of magic, and audience interaction.

Was great a performance. Maybe you should think of a reason for performing though? By that i mean why are you making the card change? Just for the sake to show magic? Or do you have some other justifiable reason?

But if your going for a gambling/sleight of hand presentation i think its fine. I think magic with a reason, is a lot more powerful and the audience will remember it. Just my 2 cents.

Good routine
Great performance, high mastery of the trick, good interaction with the spectators, and what i love about this trick and the performance that some magicians lack is the suspicion. The spectators is just amazed than they have a bit of suspicion in them
