Reverse Magic?

Postby Danny Jay » Mar 24th, '12, 12:41

Hello my friends! :)

So, lazy me was brain-storming (in bed) all this morning and was thinking about an idea i've long wanted to develop.

The idea is that during a performance (which would include some form of backing music) A sequence such as tearing a card into 4 pieces would be performed, then, the music would begin playing in reverse, everyone would move in reverse, all events would be reversed, and the 4 pieces would be restored.

So it's kind of having someone hitting a `rewind` button mid-performance. I believe David Copperfield did something like this with a sawing in half as I recall.

A particular idea that stood out to me was, being able to perhaps drop an entire deck on the floor, maybe make it look like a mess-up. Then, with the same `rewind` theme, have the cards reassemble and float back into your hand. The possibility I see for this is for a long string of fishing line to run through the centre of each card, and then have a motor-reel to pull the cards back up to my sleeve/hand.. do you know if anything like this is on the market? or even possible? the problem I foresee is the thread becoming tangled on the `drop`.

So my two questions I bring to you today my amigos are:
  • Would this reverse-dropping deck idea be possible/purchasable, are there any similar substitutes?
  • What other effects would you recommend for this theme?

    Thanks guys! :)

Somebody did the torn and restored newspaper with this exact idea on Penn and Teller recently. Very effective.

Oh just been having a little brainstorm again.

Was thinking that during a `rewind-sequence`, I could reverse blowing a candle out. (So, I would blow the candle, and it would catch fire.)

I looked into some self-lighting candles, but the only ones I found seemed to be on the £120 mark. If I was developing a seance/mentalist show, I wouldn't mind this, but because it's only a small add-on. I don't really want to spend so much.

Anyone know any alternatives? I've just found these LED candles, which I'm sure would pass. (the performance is in a stage-style setup)

Just gotta say, I'm having a great time making ideas here.. gotta love this job. I'm coming up with ways that I could perform a slow dance with a peppers-ghost and tons of things that I almost gotta use in future projects. Feel like a little kid :P

    Thanks again! :)

Some years ago Uri Gellar did a time shifting routine on TV, I can't remember all the details but there were (I think) four effects one of which was placing an ice cube in a glass tumbler, putting it in a microwave and turning the microwave on. The glass was then taken out showing it to contain only water. The other effects were similarly performed then he did something with a watch or a clock showing that time had gone back 5 minutes and lo and behold, when the glass was taken out of the microwave it contained an ice cube again.

There's a similarly themed time travel routine in Magic as a Hobby by Bruce Elliott. There are many effects which could be fitted into a routine like that.

One of Morgan & West's bits, performed by Mr West, is an entire coin routine running forwards and backwards.

Here am an video.

The Torn & Restored Newspaper as timeshift was performed for Penn & Teller by Soma.

Here's his FISM act, featuring said illusion...

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

If you know a bit about electronics, there's a DIY for a selflighting candle at http://www.magicnook.com/Magi-tronics/M ... f-Lighting" target="_blank Candle

This may not be quite what you're looking for, though, since the candles can not be lighted previously to the effect.

Of course the basics of making a selflighting candle are not that complicated theoretically, but there are some good tips in the instructions. I am having a bit of trouble with making the candle, so I wouldn't say it is easy, but it isn't very complicated either.
