Postby LoveKey1988 » Apr 9th, '12, 11:54

Hello Friends,

I have some magic and mentalism books on my PC but I already do work on my computer so it's hard to read on it. I prefer to start my own paperback and hardcover lybrary of books on mentalism and magic.

What I need from you is recommandations for best books on magic and mentalism that you think I should have in my library with time.

I also need to know where I can buy books on mentalism and magic by paypal thats my method of payment.

I already ordered the Naked Mentalism 3 books on lulu.

Please fire away with your recommandations.

Thank you!

Regards, Marian

I think Allen's pretty much covered all the bases although I'd probably add Mind Myth and Magic by TA Waters to that list. Kenton Knepper's also got some very good work out there that you might want to look into, although he mainly only releases ebooks now some of his older work is still available in print.

Classic general magic books - for starters:

The Mark Wilson Course
Modern Magic Manual by Jean Hugard (aka Hugard's Magic Manual)
The Big Book of Magic Tricks and Easy Magic by Karl Fulves
Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay
Magic and Showmanship by Henning Nelms
The Complete Magician by Marvin Kaye (aka The Stein and Day Book of Magic)

A few of those may only be available second hand. Here's a useful search site for second hand books:

Yes, I would have recommended his books - but the best one is published under several different titles and I didn't want to confuse! Amazon currently have it as "The Art of Magic and Sleight of Hand".

Speaking of Bill Severn - look out for his "Complete Book of Magic", which is a compilation of his books on mental, money and rope magic. I was astounded by his meticulous attention to detail, which puts some other well-known writers to shame. Often I've worked through an effect, props in hand, got to the "Eh?" moment and given up.

BTW, I've just remembered that I have a List on Amazon:

The Bill Severn Complete Book of Magic is £22:33 for a 527 page book.
I have had it since the 90's
Also have about 7 of his other books.
Do check out'Magic Comedy'--there are some great plots for effects in that

Might I suggest Basic Training the Book - http://www.basictrainingthebook.co.uk which is a compilation of my award winning series on sleight of hand from MUM magazine.

I too would add Mind Myth and Magic. But you will also require one very subdued spider monkey. And I'm serious. There is a trick to this wonderful book. IGNORE the effects.

But this book is gold. Learn the theory and psychology from it. Priceless.

As for other types of magic. Have you tried the basics. I would start with Mark Wilson's Course in Magic. Chances are I would also stop there.

But if you must, although they are older, get the Tarbell series. I recommend starting with two books. Book 1 because of the introduction. Basically defines magic and performance and really every magician should read it. Also I recomend book 7. It is just an index to the other volumes. But that way if somebody is talking about a trick, you can look it up, and then get the volume that contains that effect.

You can usually get a better deal by purchasing the entire series in one go. Be warned they are older, but it is all there.
