Follow the Leader Plot

Postby Lenoir » Apr 11th, '12, 14:37

Hey,

I'm currently working on my own version of the Follow the Leader card plot. If you haven't ever seen a version, it's essentially like Oil and Water except the cards match the "leader" card no matter how they are mixed etc. It has a lot of room for laughs etc but still remains extremely deceptive.

Just wondered if anybody had their own versions or recommended versions that I could look up to inspire my own.

I am currently using the first ever version I read, from Mark Wilson's, but have removed the glide and replaced it with a very fair and streamlined handling.
I still don't feel like it is quite there though to any thoughts and routines etc are more than welcome!

Thanks

There is a version in Bob Longe 101 amazing card tricks I've used for many years. Its often the trick I resort to if I'm given a deck of cards. It uses 6 red and 6 black. Very simple and the one move is done before people know where the trick is heading. The main issue I've found though is it lacks a solid ending. After they've seen that the card follows the leader by the last one it isn't much of a surprise, so I tend to do it quite fast.

Thanks, I'll look it up.

I agree though, it is an extremely quick fire routine once it gets going.

Dani DaOrtiz has a nice touch where 9 red cards turn black and then back again...too much lapping etc for my liking however.

Just checked up the Mark Wilson, the Bob Longe is almost identical to the do as I do oil and water, but with an even simpler method.

Sounds good.

If you look up the routine called Birds of a Feather...everything I have so far is identical except the method for getting the cards into the correct order before you go about the reveals.
Just didn't like the glide in that situation.

Man, Birds of a feather. I've forgotten about that one. I really used to enjoy performing that. Now I have forgotten it, Looks like I'll have to look it up.

There's a version somewhere on Bill Malone's "Malone Meets Marlo" series, and one one Juan Tamariz's "lessons In Magic.

Thanks. I've heard excellent things about the Tamariz one.

Just refreshed my memory by watching a 12 year old perform and teach it on youtube. he did a horrible job by the way, I seriously don't recommend learning it that way unless you want to perform badly. But I'm at work and bored so I don't have my regular resources. Yes an excellent routine but I remember why I stopped using it. I will have to work on changing the method.

I shall whizz a PM your way when I've got my idea fully formed.

The Tamariz routine with the Malone ending is what i think i went for in the end, but that last move is always a little iffy in every version i've seen. The Dani Da Ortiz one is called Magic Nine and is featured on "Que Raro". It is excellent, but extremely circumstance specific and not strictly speaking fully within the follow the Leader plot all the way.

It looks excellent in his hands but almost all of his material is very very very specific to his style.

The version I am near completing is very short and sweet but magical nonetheless. Only four cards in each packet and the leader cards...Never keen when there are close to 10 cards changing...somewhat dull often.

I remember Darwin Ortiz' version being extremely clever but utterly brain numbing.

Think you may have just described the entire Ortiz collection :)
