Printing onto blank cards?

Postby Karma » Apr 12th, '12, 14:29

Has anyone tried printing onto blank cards? What printer do you use? My Canon printer will not print onto something so small as a card.
Or is there somewhere that this can be done?

Do you want a design printed onto the back or the face of a pack of playing cards? If the back then this can be done relatively cheaply.

There are many problems asociated with printing your own cards.

. Inkjets will smudge.
. Blank bicycles, or other makes, need to be secured to a base sheet with problems of registration on the page. and problems if the card becomes detached inside your printer. Also problems if the print head hits the edge of the card as it moves over the card.
. Blank bikes cards have a coating that needs to be removed before printing and then applied after printing.

Best is to print onto A4 card and cut the card later with guillotine and corner edge clippers. Then coat the cards with a finish to stop smudging.
Printing 2 sided is even worse as tiny movements will cause mis-registration and the front and back will not align.

Its frustratingly good fun to experiment with your own cards, but probably cheaper in the long run to buy gimmicked card from the likes of Christian Schenk of http://www.card-shark.de or others.

What Discombobulator said (although there are a few other options). If you want more information, see this thread and the other ones linked to from it: ftopic27447-0-asc-0.php

I had a go at this for a John Guasaferro trick ( Fairy Tale Frogs)

I chose a frog design off of the net.
Then messed with it a little untill I was happy with it.
I sent a piece of A4 paper through the printer, layed a card over the top of the frog design, &
cut out where the card was printed.
I then used this as a template as to where the card would be printed, layed it over another piece of A4, & drew a pencil line.
I now had a piece of A4 paper with a pencil square drawn on the front where the card would print if I sent it through again.
I attached a blank face card to this using double sided tape, & sent it back through the printer again, & out came a printed frog card.
I've been using this effect for over a year now, & the cards are still ok.

Did you use an inkjet or laser printer?

I want to print individual things onto the front of the card. It's for a memorised deck routine that I'm just starting to develop. It will be an anniversary trick for the wife If I can think up some good ideas.

I like the template and tape idea and will give this a go.
