different classic card effects help needed :)

Postby Miniolo » May 13th, '12, 20:09

Hi there im recently busy cleaning up my repertoire and just concentrating on 2 types of 1 effect a impromptu version or setupped or gimmicked routine so that i can concentrate on maximum 2 sandwich types effects instead of 5 variations

for example i have 2 ace assembly's

1 is the Mac donalds aces that is setupped and gimmicked
and the other is Bold aces by ben train (still doubting if this is the best impromptu ace assembly though)

I would love to get you guys oppinion about what u think is the best effect gimmicked and normal.

For now i got this kinda list

1-oil and water
2-Out of this world type effect
3- do as i do
4- ace assembly
5- cards across
6- traveling cards ?? (dont know if this is the correct name)
7- sandwich
8- acaan
9- color changing deck
10- monte
11- ambitious (more thinking about faces and a nice kicker at the end)
12- pick a card effect
13- thought of card effect
14- poker routine
15- prediction
16- transposition
17- torn and restored
18- triumph
19- penetration effect
20- animations (haunted deck)

there problably are more but this is bassicly what i mean :) so please share your thoughts with me about what u think is the best of the best

You will probably hate me for my answer. But I'm going to say it anyway. And I'll say it till there are no magicians out there to listen.

All the effects on your list and all the effects screaming to be on your list? They are just effects. One is not better than the other. Doesn't matter what anybody else says. Trust in me.

Everyone will give you answer's depending on their own experience. What works for them. And that pretty much tells the tale. The effect, the impact on the audience is in the performance of the effect. Give one magician a Svengali deck and give the other a normal deck and perform Oil and Water. The better magician is going to get the best reaction.

Find out the effect you like and then put your own unique spin on it, tell your own story with it. Perform the carp out of it, and I guarnatee it will slay the audience. Regardless of what others may think of as the 'best' effect.

And just so you know. Effects like Ace Assembly, Oil and Water, Out of this World all fall under the same plot. Oil And Water, Out of This World are names of specific effects that fall under the plot not catagories of card magic. Not that it matters, but just thought I'd point it out.

What he said^^
An effect is only as good as how it is presented.
I've seen some technically brilliant ACRs with lots of XCM cuts etc that were magician foolers but because there was nothing to the presentation I was not entertained. On the other hand, OOTW done with a good bit of patter and buildup is fabulous.

I concur with the comments of my learned freinds above, magic is all about the performance. Give your audience something to remember, something wonderous, draw them in and make them really experience it. If you can do that, the trick isn't going to matter but your audience will always go away entertained.

I agree ... and would also add.

Pick a card, find a card - repeat - This is pretty much ALL I do!
I have a lot of variations though!

I think it's somewhere in the 'Royal Road'. "If you know a hundred ways to find a card and only one way of producing it you only know one trick."
