The Illusionist is rather good. Edward Norton is a good actor.

its not about a magician, but you might enjoy The Sting, John Scarne performs some card technique in it.
its a very enjoyable film.
this website might interest you:

Eric Mead, Arron Fisher, Max Maven, Homer Liwag, Jim Steinmeyer, David Regal and Roberto Giobbi each list their five favorite films, The sting features on 3 of the lists.

also i did a google search and found this article:

i thoroughly enjoyed Prestige, so you might like to check that one out.

The Sting is one of my all-time favourite films. Although it's not strictly about magic, it uses a lot of magical techniques (misdirection, kicker ending etc.). And it's a brilliant story with great performances throughout.

Another one, and I only saw this recently, is Nightmare Alley. Again, not strictly about magicians, it is about carnival psychics and two-person telepathy, but it's another really good movie.

I thought 'The Illusionist' was a mawkish piece of cr@p (YMMV).
Much better is 'The Prestiege' (Christopher Nolan)
You might also like 'Shade' (deals strictly with cardsharking)

One that people don't seem to mention is 'Is Anybody There?' starring Michael Caine. Good film - not great, but certainly worth a watch.

There was a film about a ventriloquist whose dummy came to life and made him kill. I read the book (Magic, by William Goldman), and I reckon it would have been a good film. He wrote the screenplay himself.

"Miracles for Sale" (1939), based on the novel "Death from a Top Hat" by Clayton Rawson. The victim, suspects and detective (The Great Merlini) are all magicians. It's a classic locked-room mystery.

It starred Anthony Hopkins, no less, and did indeed have some wonderfully creepy moments.

Now, this is necessarily "good" but when I was a kid I was very impressed by it.

Mandrake (1979) was based on a comic strip I think and the film had a cameo by Harry Blackstone Jr.

It was about a stage magician who fought crime with his magic skills, as far as I remember at least.

The original Leon Mandrake also starred in films featuring him as the crime fighting magish and, for the last 10 years at least, there have been rumours of a new Mandrake film - Tom Cruise was one of the names supposedly signed for the lead role. How about one of the oldest? The Conjurer by George Mellies 1899 - see http://trionfi.com/n/090901/33.php

These days when magic in movies is mentioned it's in relationship to the Harry Potter or the fantasy and fairy tales type of magic.

Not exactly magic, but Houdini made a number of films.
