Baby Step towards performing

Postby Relish » May 22nd, '12, 17:47

Ive finally started to take my magic as something a bit more serious than a hobby.

Tomorrow I have a talent competition in work which im doing 3 gambling based card routines building to a prediction. Its only a 5 minute slot and im sure a singer will win, but thought it would be good practice for performing. I know ive got the routine down, but im not too sure how many times i should run through the routine tonight though, if any? any suggestions?

Secondly,I realise that there are people on here who dont speak well of societies, but im attending a lecture By Peter Mclanachan at the Cardiff Magical Society on the 28th May.

So i have my first competition and lecture within a week of each other and im really excited.

:D

Tonight? Don't rehearse too many times. If you don't know it by now, it's too late and you might make yourself nervous.

It won't necessarily be a singer who wins. It could equally be someone who dances, probably to 70s or 80s stuff. :)

The main thing is to put in a good performance, that you're happy with. Hope it goes well.

Aye, good luck with the competition. My money's on that performing dog in accounts, though.

"Just have fun with it", is my perennial advice. Also, don't get flummoxed by positive reactions early on. :)

thanks for all the support guys. It went really well and im still buzzing from the excitement.

we only had 5 mins each so i planned to do 3 quick tricks with another as an 'afterthought'. I kept the theme as 'gambling based' but it was more like things to consider and avoid if you are a gambler.

I started with Gemini twins using a red king and a black king. The story was not to bet too heavily on pairs in poker as 1) they are more statistically likely to come out and 2) 'twinned pairs' (pairs of the same colour) have an affinity, and like human twins can often know where each other are, the kings then find each other in the deck.

This left me with the 4 kings, so i went into Panic by Aaron Fisher. The story here was that in poker, it doesnt matter what hand you have , whats more important is what others believe you have. Then i took the whole deck and turned it into the four kings. This left them stunned and i was shocked at how hard it hit.

To finish, I forced a card and pretended to read inflections in their voices as they read out 'black card, red card', 'Spades hearts diamonds clubs' and then 'Ace --King' as a demonstration of how they should be careful what they say in a poker game.

As i was about to leave, i asked a judge to reach in and grab a card, and then i left them with an envelope and aksed them to open it after i'd left and it would explain more.

on the letter i had written...

-----------------

Thank you for your time watching me perform today.

The real purpose of this demonstration of gambling is to see how easily an individual can be influenced. You were asked to choose a card from a deck of 52 playing cards, and this would have seemed like a fair choice, however the preceding routines that you have seen may have influenced your decision.

7 days a ago, a sealed envelope was given to (The MD of the company) with a prediction of which card would be selected.

Please feel free to contact (The MD)to see if maybe you are more susceptible to being influenced that you thought.

Rich

-----------------------------

i have just had an email saying that the routine was so good they want to put the video on our intranet, especially the bit at the end! ive asked if i can review it first (to avoid exposure) but im surprised how a deck switch and one way forcing deck can be so effective!

Its been said loads of times, but often the most amazing effects have the simplest methods, and i will never discount something just because it looks too easy.

Ive caught the bug badly now, and can appreciate that putting a narrative to a run of effects makes everything flow so much better than having a few isolated ones.

:)

ps its Admiral i work for

Well done to you, sounds like it all went brilliantly. Amazing isn't it, how the simplest of things can get the best reactions. :D

Yaaay, well done! I totally agree about flow, having the trick-before set the deck for the trick-after has been a real eyeopener for me, and narrative sequence makes everything just hang together naturally. Good luck with the magic soc next!

It would be great to see the video, and I'm glad that it went so well for you. The start of bigger things, perhaps?

Ha ha! What a surprise. I don't know why people bother having general talent competitions - it always seems to be a singer who wins. Shame really. Anyway, so long as it was a good experience that's the main thing.
