Antiques? Any thoughts?

Postby hds02115 » Jun 5th, '12, 23:27

This evening I've been doing some clearing out of my desk area pending the end of the long weekend. In my cleaning frenzy I emptied out a draw completely only to find at the bottom back corner these lovely cards. I remember that my Grandfather had given them to me a while back but after "putting them in a safe place", I had forgotten about them. I actually meant to post them on here before and so although it a little late here's my plea.

Are these cards antiques of some kind? Worth any money to a collector? Special in any way? I very much doubt I'll sell them if they are worth a few bob, but it's nice to know still. Here are some photos.

On top of the card box there is an airplane embossed as well as "Waddington's Playing Cards".

The bottom of the box has a card stuck to it to display the back design.

Written in black in inside the folding lid is what appears to be "Mr . G . Macdonald". Not my family name nor has it been to the best of my knowledge.

Cards have golden edges.

Ace of spades, photo couldn't make out the reference number, but from what I could make of it, it reads "REG. 704???". The last three digits are too small to read.

DSC01378.JPG

Card back design with small writing at the bottom saying "Vickers "Victoria"", which is the name of the type of aircraft shown. Cargo and troop planes used by the RAF a few years after the end of WWI.

That's all the photos I have taken for now. I'd apriciate it very much if anyone can give me any fresh information on these cards. They may end up being worthless but as they hold sentimental value, it would be great to have the full facts.

Do a google search on antique playing card collectors you should be able to find someone that can point you in the right direction from there.

They look absolutely gorgeous and probably are a collector's premium, I'm betting one of the old Cigarette companies that had coupons that came with the packs like Bel-air & Raleigh.

looking at the condition of the cards, and the overall condition of the box, i would sugest that these cards are not original 1933 edition, but a later re print. And Clearly, they have never been used.

Yes they have been well kept. I'm unsure as to how my grandfather came to have them though which would have been a useful piece of information. Looking at the ebay link, they do look similar. Judging by the box these are in though I'd assume they were defiantly a collectible pack of cards rather than a standard deck which would have a regular tuck box.

I have actually e-mailed the people at WOPC's about these cards, including a photo so perhaps they can shed some light on them as to their date, printing, value, ect...

As a quick after thought, I don't suppose contacting the people at Wadington's would help would it? If so, how would one get in touch as my trusty google search hasn't turned up an actual website for the company. Do they still make cards any more? Last I saw of them I think they'd kind of lowered their standards a bit and were making cheap paper thin cards for WH Smiths.

you might find that the good people at cards for magic could offer you some help, since they have been dealing with all kinds of decks for many years now.
Its my understanding that Waddingtons dont make cards any more, since in 1994 Hasbro bought the company out.

Received a reply not too long ago from WOPC's:

Your Waddington's "Victoria Vickers" set of playing cards is a very
attractive vintage item... soon to become antique! Certainly if it has
it's Joker (1) it would be very collectible but even more as sentimental
value.

Apart from it's presence in the Waddington's 1933 brochure, I don't know
anything more about the design. At that time Britain was recovering from
a big recession and Waddington's were very successful at surviving those
times.

Sorry I can't really be of much more help!

Interesting reply.

Perhaps you can get in touch with these fine folks

http://www.collectorsplayingcards.co.uk/sale_list.htm

There is a place on the page for you to get intouch with them. I did look through several of the catagories but could not find your particular cards. But I'm at work and just had a quick look. At least there are prices with the decks.
