I hate that trick with a passion. The routine goes on and on and on with complication after complication. As my old friend Murray the escapologist would say, "Conjuring for conjurers". It doesn't mean a thing to layman. I far prefer the Malini dictum, "Cut the rope once and restore it-that's enough" I confess to cutting it and restoring it twice, probably to the disapproval of Malini, but that is certainly more than enough. Any more than that you are on the verge of making the audience hope you are going to hang yourself.
Magicians really need to learn to simplify things rather than complicate them. Many of my tricks come from children's books and I am quite happy with them.
