Working with the unknown

Postby Aza » Jun 19th, '12, 22:34

Hi all,

As you can see I'm the newbie here, but i have done a few gigs, private functions, table hopping and close up during presentations, between meals etc.

I have now been asked to do a promotion in conjunction with the local toy shop and am slightly apprehensive!!

I do not doubt my ability with regard to working with people of all ages, not to blow my own trumpet, but i am very personable and can engage with almost anybody.

What concerns me is my lack of effects for children, i do not under estimate they can follow some routines, but i do not want to over complicate matters.

I have some simple, fast, hard hitting stuff, like gemini twins (of course) and Dr Daley's for the parents.

I also do a simple matchbox prediction and the old Grey Elephants in Denmark....

I do a card to impossible location using the remote transport effect, along with a torn and restored with David Stone's 'Tool'

For the challenge i do 3 cards across from Royal Road and a book test from Karl Fulves self working mentalism magic.

In addition to this i do a similar routine to dynamo, with multiple selections, a transposition etc. and the card to mouth/shoe/blah blah....

I also have a domino prediction, and a miracle ring, which gets good reactions.

Lastly i do the phone in balloon effect, which was 'borrowed' from Michael Ammar

Problem being i don't see much there for the youngsters, any ideas?!

Much love

Aza

I'm not the best person to answer your main question, but it might help to understand the context a bit more. You said that you are doing a "promotion in conjunction with the local toy shop", but what is the aim? Is it just advertising, like a family fun day that they are sponsoring somewhere, are you performing in the shop (if so, it is presumably to get people in and buying) or are you supposed to help them sell magic specifically?

Hey Part-Timer,

It's a bit of everything really, performing in the local square & outside the shop to get people in and buying, I'm working on a transposition effect whereby their selected card turns into my business card, which entitles them to a discount.

I will also be demoing the kids magic sets in the store to sell them.

Much love

How long have you got? Only if you've got time, why not put together some sponge or silk routines? They're nice and visual which is great for children. If you haven't really got time then you're probably best sticking with what you know.

Hi Lady of Mystery,

I was thinking of doing something with sponges, could you recommend a reference?

I'll search my vast library of items, see what i can find!

The routine in Mark Wilson's Complete Course is a nice place to start, also Steve Dacri's Sponge Ball Toolkit is very good.

Well it seems to me that what you need to do is learn the stuff that they are selling in the kit that they want you to sell.

And yes, Mark Wilson Course is the place to look. Also look in the section using rope and silks. Fast, visual, simple plots and easy to carry around.

I'd have thought so. That was why I asked the question I did! It sounds like Aza already has that in hand, though.

You can always take the Mark Lewis/ Andy Nyman approach and put together a killer routine with the basic props, which the kids will never be able to do (without some serious practice). "No skill required whatsoever."

Hey guys,

thanks for the responses, i have the products that are going to be sold, which are simple enough to demo, they really are 'kids' magic sets, with a sven deck and little bits and pieces!

think i will take that on board Part-Timer, nice thought!!

Much love
