Good source for sponge ball routines

Postby The4thCircle » Jun 25th, '12, 21:00

I won't beat around the bush, CUPS is driving me crazy, a certain online magic store has a sale on and I want to buy something before 10am tomorrow.

examining the space I want to expand into I see that despite having spent THREE WHOLE POUNDS on a book dedicated to sponge balls, I still never find myself doing anything more complex than two in the hand, one in the pocket, and multiplying things in the spectators hands. I have different colours of sponge balls, I have different sizes of sponge balls and I have different densities of spnge balls. I want to learn a routine or two that puts this selection to better use.

I also have two types of sponge rabbits.

Any suggestions?

Lots of routines out there.

Check out Sponge by Jay Noblezada.

It has some great ideas and routines. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1671" target="_blank

Jay Noblezada's DVD is pretty good, but I think you might get more out of Steve Dacri's Spongeball Toolbox (n.b. not "sponge ball" if you are dealing with a finicky search - assuming the site has spelled it correctly, of course) and Duane Laflin's Clever Sponge Ball Magic, which inlcudes a lot of sponge moves you don't see in the more generic resources.

There's also the sponge balls volume of World's Greatest Magic, if neither of the other two items I have suggested can be found at your mystery site.

I have read a couple of books on the subject, but I think the DVDs I mentioned above might suit you better.

While sponge ball routines aren't my thing I remember reading one in Secrets and Mysteries for the close-up Entertainer by Eugene Burger that sounded quite good. Might be worth having a look at if you can. I hear that Eugene's sponge routine is quite well known as being a good one. Like I said though, it's not my area so just a thought.

There's a very long Sponge ball routine in Mark Wilson.

"Magic Page by Page" (also not available from YFD) has both Pat's own sponge ball routine and also his version of the Benson Bowl, which you can find in a number of books including Classic Secrets of Magic. That book also gives several other uses for sponge balls in conjunction with cups (as opposed to CUPS).

I second Spongeball Toolbox, think it is excellent.

Ends 10am? Have I missed a sale somewhere? My wife will be pleased. (until I buy something at full price)

Though you'll need to ignore Steve Dacre's finger nails!

I have to admit I kind of had Jay Noblezada's Sponge in mind before asking but I didn't want to mention it by name in case it was too leading.

The other responses have clued me into other sources though. I was very interested in Duane Laflin's Clever Sponge Ball Magic but it wasn't in the shop with the sale. That's down on my future purchase list.

Though I'm sure the toolbox is good, I already have far too many sponge balls and purse frames.

I'll also have another look through my copy of Mark Wilson's complete course.

Thanks for all the feedback.

It's quite nice, but mainly because of the ending. It's featured on the World's Greatest Magic DVD I mentioned. As I recall, Eugene also has some interesting tips on conditioning sponges (he prefers conditioned regular sponges over super soft).

Too late (if it was even available), but another one to look at for the future is Protons, which makes good use of those little lights. You know the ones. :)

You used to be able to get a light up sponge ball too, that I thought would go well with this. It was a Dean Dill item called Spotlight, but might not be around any more. I can't find it in the place I bought it, but it seems to be showing on Dean's website.

Patrick Page's Sponge Ball DVD is the best one to look at, lots and lots of completely different routines, effects and stimulating ideas on it. A bit late to tell you that now though I guess.

I'm probably going to pick up a few more later so it's never too late.
