Just an announcement i suppose, i spoke to the lovely people that run the pier and got myself a residency!!

I perform as and when i like to all the visiting families, just walk around stuff, so if anybody can recommend any quick bits i could use it would be appreciated!

also feel free to congratulate me on having an amazing venue for performing and perfecting my repertoire :)

Card magic ... Paul Gordon's DVDs and all of Lee Smith / Gary Jones DVDs. When i still did 'normal' magic it was what i used and the unknown DVD (RSVP) is very good.

Aza. You MIGHT, in time become the next Bertram of Clacton.

He began his pro career at Clacton in 1923! Success followed and the owner of the Pier built him a theatre--The Children's Theatre.
It held 650 people.
His success was so great in 1938 he was given a larger theatre, still on the Pier. This one held a thousand people.
Like you he began with impromptu performances with his wife, 'Auntie Ruby' assistaing.
Later when the theatre was such a success he engaged pro child performers to swell the 'cast'.
There were 2 shows a day. One in the afternoon for children & one in the evening for Adults. There were always long queues for tickets.

The 1939 terminated his performances but he was asked to perform again after the war.
Sadly the strain of 17 years daily performing, with NEVER a performance missed, had taken its tolland he had to refuse.

I quote from the late Maurice Hurling--the well known ventriloquist--'There is no doubt that, like others before him, he had given his life to the great cause of making other people happy.'

There is a slim book of some 23 pages that he wrote--'Entertaining The Modern Child', published by George Armstrong's 'Magic Wand Publications', in 1956
it contains his philosphy and a number of routines, competitions and ideas for entertaining youngsters. And of course the parents & relatives with them.
Second hand copies do emerge from time to time. BUT NOT from Amazon--they charge twice the price! £12 is a fair price for this booklet.

One of his Vent dialogues was published in Supreme's 'Magigram'-- the ones which were the pocket book size.
Supremem also published 2 of his routines. 1. 'A Letter For The Conjuror' a simple coin vanish in paper with 2 children assisting and 2. 'Disabell'--again with 2 children, a cod comedy 'vanish' of a hand bell. Magic Books BY Post may still have these.

Hi Aza,

Is it a paid residency, or are they just happy for you to be performing for the visitors?

What sort of residency is that then? If that is the case, anyone who performs magic in any pub, club, street etc free of charge has a residency. Non paying residencies/gigs do not put food on the table or pay the bills.

Best of luck with anymore free residencies that you may get

Apologies if my choice of words offended you Steve

It's a residency in the sense that i have permission to perform in quite a fantastic location and wanted to share my happiness with the community here!!

Perhaps i should keep my contributions to a minimum as to avoid upsetting people in future

Aza. You are always FREE to state your opinions on Talk Magic.
1.Just do not expose anything--and I know you will not
2.If there is anything you feel like criticising--keep it constructive
3. never just run any magician down--although in Magic we do have some spiteful & magically political ones.
4. Never ask how a trick is done...ask for the references of where to find the info.

And never be afraid to show your own joy, happiness and passion for Magic.

Play nicely please, Deano!

Aza, don't worry and as Allen said, you're always free to post here. Personally I think it's always great when a someone gets out there are starts performing and there's nothing wrong with doing it for free to start with. Well done to you for having the nerves to make that leap, it's far more than many of the arm chair magicians will ever do.

Getting out and doing it, for free or otherwise, is how you get good. And in fact you shouldn't be doing it for money until you get good anyway. So in fact you are actually doing the right thing.
