Trick and their trailers

Postby Magical_Trevor » Jul 3rd, '12, 17:10

Hey guys, not sure if this is already a thread - sorry if its a repeat, I couldn't find anything via the search function.

Basically, I got an awesome email from MOM and its almost the perfect trick for what I do and how I present myself (seems similar to the heirloom wallet props).
my issue is, there is no presentation actually shown in the demo video, its just reaction shots and the description ... I know that if it was a stage trick, or a card move, that a full demo could allow a skilled magician to work the trick out and not have to buy the trick (eg if someone was selling an ambitious card routine using the DL, P*** or simply P******). However, I dont see how if the gimmick is that good, that a full demo cant be shown ... :/

On the flip side, Peter Nardi of Alakazam has recently released a trick and has shown a FULL presentation of it - most likely the same real world demo which will be on the instructional DVD, and its only using cards, I have no clue how it is done, but after seeing a FULL demo I am much more likely to but it ...

Thoughts?

Dan

Demo / trick is here :D

I would imagine with an effect that sells itself as a full story routine, half of what you're paying for is the presentation, so seeing it presented in full is like getting some of the product for free. An experienced card worker may like the routine and perform it with sleights they already know, hence absorbing all the value they would have gotten from a purchase without paying a single penny.

Often videos will leave out parts of the performance where something fiddly happens, showing instead the visual moments in between the convincers, acquittals and such, because many magi could probably figure out the routine and start performing it instantly having watched the trailer, particularly in the fast paced "everything old is new again" world of card and coin magic, where practically nothing truly new has been invented in decades.

Except my routine. That's very new. It also sucks, but it's my suck.

Oh and there's also a longer thread on this kind of nonsense that I started a few days ago:
