I might be a noob, but I know a bargain when I see one

Postby paultheoneyoulove » Jul 5th, '12, 23:17

I have spent the last 6 months or so reading and practising from the Royal Road and Bobo's (top recommendations, guys!) Thanks to exams (just finished my chemistry degree), I'm really rather out of practise. However, the other day, I picked up Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It was from a guy who drops by the uni and sells books he is given by people. I asked him to name a price - £2. I gave him £2 and a coffee - what a steal! Anyway, any thoughts on this book? I'm going to start on it tomorrow, but from a flick through, it seems to cover a lot. Might use it as a 'revision' from all that time off I've had!

Anyway, anyone else had any crazy bargains lately?

Never miss out on grabbing a bargain! Mark Wilson's book is just about THE book to have, both to start with and for the rest of any magical career. Well worth paying full price certainly well worth £2. Dunno about the coffee, depends on the brand  !

Haha! Yeah, it looks good, and it's really big. Covers everything! I am really excited to start on it again, I've really missed practising on my parents (bless them). The coffee was cafe' direct - made even better because, on campus, a double shot is £1.20. So in effect, I got the book for £3.20. All in all, not too shabby! And enough to remind me about how much I loved doing it. Without seeing that, I might not have started again yet.

I also just got Close Up Magic For Beginners by Harry Baron for about £3 including postage from an Amazon marketplace bookstore. Says I won't get it for a few weeks though, so I'll just work my way through some of my first bargain book :D

I really want to try hypnotism and mentalism, but I feel like I should already be confident enough to do some good impromptu tricks first. And confidence isn't my strongest point so... :P

To do hypnotism and mentalism you need presentational skills, not a few impromptu tricks. Hypnosis particularly is a presentational art, like stand-up comedy. Tricks won't get you there.

Having said that, Mark Wilson's book is a great resource, and should be on everyone's library shelf.

Excellent bargain! Another newbie here. I've just ordered this myself. Although I am mainly interested in close up card magic with an interest in mentalism further down the line, reading through a lot of the posts on here I have realised that I should have a working knowledge of different areas and not just the ones that I wish have as my main expertise. This book is the one I have had recommended to me over and over.

Shaun.

Mark Wilson's course is one of the best books of its kind out there.
