Calling all card men/women

Postby Aza » Jul 9th, '12, 11:56

Hello you lovely lot,

I have decided to focus my time and effort on cards for the time being as it is my first love and one of the main reasons i got into magic, now i would like to ask the following:

I want to do some "juggling" with the cards, i can make cards jump in the air, snap changes, lennart greens top shot thingy, a hot shot cut and card catch and various other fancy flourishes, now i know flourishes not a good magician make! but i do believe they enhance my effects, so i was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of fancy cuts, juggling etc.

I know it's show offy, but hey, if it entertains its magic right?

Much love

Aza

Personally I think too many flourishes are off-putting to the general public.
Having said that if you want to go down the flourish etc route there may be stuff for you on the handlordz site (although you probably already have it bookmarked!)

Try Dan and Dave.

Out of curiosity, which effects do you think card "juggling" improves?

If you really feel the urge to learn some XCM (and it can be very difficult) then you may want to look at the Devo series of DVDs. Many people in this field use his methods. http://www.xtremehandz.com/page/page/1177404.htm

But steer clear of Brian Tudor's stuff.
Apart from his first showoff video I guess.

So does this mean there aren't going to be any more posts of you suddenly asking after something completely different to the last post about an hour before? Just pulling your leg, kind of.

As for flourishes, I wouldn't call them magic, you said it right the first time by calling it juggling. I'm not knocking them though as it takes great skill and many many months of practice to become good at them. Too much effort for not a lot of gain for me to learn anything more than a few simple things.

A word of warning though with regards to fancy flourishes. If you're planning on doing them, don't pair them with card tricks as people will be well aware of the dexterity you have and will become overly observant of you. Plus, as they will start thinking sleight of hand is at play more so than normal, it will suck some of the mystery out of the magic.

For resource though it seems like the places to look are Dan and Dave's site and anything Devo. Be prepared for a lot of practice and commitment though as unlike card magic where you are performing sleights, you don't have the misdirection to help you get away with a minor error, instead you will have yourself a not so fun game of fifty two card pick up.

Best of luck and hopefully you'll start to knuckle down to master an area rather than having all your threads running off topic towards everyone telling you to learn to focus.

Just another after thought, Jeff McBride is pretty well famous for manipulation magic and as he along with Eugene Burger and several other magicians have a kind of magic school, you'll probably get some good teaching from anything he has to offer. Might be worth a try. Surprised he's not been mentioned already.

lovely job you lot!!

I just like juggling the cards, it's generally an attention grabbing thing more than using them in conjunction with effects, but at the same time i like revealing cards in fun ways such as jumping it from the pack and fancy cuts and spin outs....

It seems to be well received i don't go overboard with it, i think everything in moderation works toward the overall effect and i know you guys seem to be a bit adverse to juggling, but it's fun, i enjoy it and it's going to give me focus so win win all round eh?!

And thanks HDS...appreciate your humour....git...sort of lol

No seriously, i appreciate all the time you all put in to helping me on my way

Much love

Aza

Hello Aza,

As Lawernce says "Try Dan & Dave".

I have the "tricksandflourishesandeverythingelse" dvd
As well as having many very eloborate flourishes on there.
It also has some good card tricks, but be warned, this is very difficult stuff to learn.

Having said that, there is some stuff on there that I myself use with other card tricks.
I wouldn't want to make it a liftimes study. Many simple self working card tricks can get just as good
of a reaction if performed well.

I recently bought Daniel Chards "Chardshark" dvd
This may also be something you might want to consider, it has some really powerful card magic in it's content, & some nice handling.

What ever you decide to do.
I wish you well.
