Ideas for Glass Shattering Routine

Postby djay » Jul 9th, '12, 06:57

Hey forum,

I am planning on performing a glass-shattering routine in a parlour setting.

I am just wondering on what type of presentation would be a nice use. I was thinking a kind of `voodoo` kind of routine, the Spectactor would squeeze a glass bottle in their hand, attempting to break it, but instead causing a glass on a table to break!.

Or perhaps the classic "I'll make the coin beneath this glass disappear?"

Any ideas would be great! thanks allot!

What is your style? Whatever presentation you choose should fit in with who you are and how you perform.

There's a plethora of things that need to be considered, the two ways I use a glass break will differ from how others do it and so forth. The primary setting that I've used this sort of thing in is a Seance or Haunt type situation and there is no focus on the glass whatsoever. It's what I call a "side effect" in that it is incidental to what I have the group focused on -- something that happens outside of our magick circle. In my mind this makes the happenstance far stronger psychologically and similarly, it's not my ego saying "look at what I can do".

The other thing about breaking glass & plates, etc. is public safety; nine times out of ten that means putting the object into a container of some sort be it a bell jar dome or plastic bag which to me, smacks of "Magic Trick", the last form of association I want such a manifestation to have UNLESS I'm claiming TK up front and have proven it on a lesser course, building up to the breaking. . . then again, my variation to the Bending Wine Glass in which a break happens isn't covered in the least. . . I allow distance to be the protection.

If you've spent the money to buy such a device (especially the over-priced tables) then shame on you. . . you should have had at least a rudimentary routine in mind before making the investment. Far too much magic ends up on a dust collecting shelf because people buy on impulse vs. purpose. Know what you want and why; though you may have to alter some of your handling due to method, at least you have an idea when it comes to how you're going to use that item and why it's logical to invest in the thing to begin with. Otherwise you're wasting time and money and in the long run, you'll take a loss on the prop by selling it cheap just to be rid of it or worse, you'll have it in storage for so long you not only forget how to work it, you'll have lost the instructions to it as well as parts or else damaged it beyond use. . . this is the typical pattern of things.

So think about the setting that will give you the strongest reaction that fits your persona as well as the circumstances of the program. Try to be creative, even if you elect to use the "side effect" idea I've outlined here. . . the shatter must seem as happenstance, not like a set-up, so plan it all out.

thanks for the advise!

no, i have not purchased anything, i simply have my eye on the glass shatter. I do want to be sure i have some solid ideas before any purchase is made.

I do have plenty ideas, from your post, i assume you have a form of such a device. Do you know if these devices are powerful enough to crack a small, ice-cube-shape, piece of glass? I thought this idea would work well in a close-up setting as it could be covered by a plastic glass.

thanks allot,

That's the device I had my eye on, but as I said, I'm unsure whether this mini-version would be strong enough to crack CUBES of ice (only small) vs. the wine glass it's advertised `crashing`

My friend, I have to ask exactly why do you want to perform this? Do you have a place for something like this in your routine or are yoou just looking for something, dare I say it 'cool'?

They go with a HELL of a crack. It'll break your fingers so it'll have no problem with an ice cube.

If it'll break your fingers.. are you saying that objects don't have to be actual glass? I'm not sure on the workings of the device so I wasn't sure.
