Mrs.M and I went there in 2001 and we had a great week. Cancun has a lot of Shopping Malls, liquor shops, fast food places and restaurants where there's a guy outside who assumes you're always hungry and just waiting to be shown into his place - they walk in front of you and almost shove you into the place if you're not nimble on your feet! A firm No thanks is usually enough but sometimes they still try and talk you into their place so keep walking and take no notice. As Cancun is a strip of land recovered from the swap land, there's one main road and it had a good bus service, fixed price and not too long between buses. Once you've done the Malls, the eating places, perhaps a bar or two, you might spot that a lot of it isn’t actually finished off but that seems to be normal. The main town is worth a visit but watch where you go - if it seems a bit dodgy, it probably is so keep to the populated areas. Beaches are superb and the sea really is a deep blue - it's part of the Caribbean so only to be expected. Water sports, diving, boating etc all over the place and if you prefer to just snooze on the beach all day you will have no problems. Assuming that your hotel has a strip of beach because most beaches are privately owned. Trips to the ruins etc are well arranged but it's best to check whether the place you're visiting is actually as open as it sounds. We were told that Chichén Itzá was to be closed to the public after 2002 due to the way tourists were causing erosion so it may only be visible from the ground. Almost inevitably a guided tour will stop at a convenient souvenir shop and/or restaurant where the local kids will do traditional Mexican dances. They also expect hard cash! In short, nice place, stick to the bottled water, refuse all offers of ice in drinks even if they swear it's all purified. It might not be - Montezuma still takes revenge and you don’t want that on honeymoon!

The Beaches shouldn't be a problem because the Hotel we are stopping in is the RIU Cancun 5* all inclusive with a private beach.

All the water sports are included in the package and food and drink aswell.

Think I'm going to lay back and read a good magic book and just chill out.

I was thinking of putting something together for my wedding reception like producing some flowers from nowere for my new mothering law. Do you have anything that would help me with this?

Both Bananfish and Slippery Penguin have done the odd bit of magic at their respective Wedding Receptions so hang on for replies from them!

PS The hotel we stayed at was on a Bed and Breakfast basis but the breakfasts were excellent. Far too much choice, far too much nice stuff to eat, and far too much weight to shed after I got home!

Me and 'future' Mrs Seige are going to Cancun for our honeymoon in September '06.

Can't decide on a hotel yet—looked at Moon Palace so far. Oooh how those Thomas Cook reps make EVERY hotel sound like 'the one'.

We've been advised strongly to do absolutely nothing but be pampered and take in the luxurious ambiance. :D

Joking aside, one thing that DID get my attention was Xcaret, a Mayan eco theme park type thingy. Apparently an absolute must see for culture and wonderment.

Can recommend Xcaret even though some of it is recreated for the tourists. Superb grounds, great food on offer, plenty of chilling out areas to soak up the sun if preferred. We didn't swim the underground river (claustrophobia rules, OK) but those who did from our tour were gobsmacked by it. The guys who fling themselves off a very tall pole attached by bits of rope were incredible and, if things haven’t changed, there's an evening show which is sheer fantasy - well worth it. My Niece and her boyfriend stayed at the Moon Palace a few years ago, will check and see what they thought of it. (I'm getting jealous now!)

I would highly recommend the Hotel that we are staying in RIU Cancun.

The moon palace resort has fantastic rooms with the spa in the middle but my friend went there and said it was too close to the airport and constantly had planes flying over. V noisey.

Have a look at www.riu.com and the click on hotels on the red bar then Hotels on the grey bar. Then rind Hotel riu cancun in the list.

I'm not just saying this because it is the hotel we are staying at. I spent hours researching all the best hotels on the island and the top 3 were.

1. Riu Cancun

2. Moon palace resort

3. Riu Palace

The RIU Palace is stunning but out of all the RIU Cancun offered us the best package for our Wedding. Check the link belowe for a picture of the terrace we are getting married under.

Hi Taylor

With regards to the magic, the appearing flowers for the mother-in-law is an excellent idea. Although personally I would limit the magic to that one effect at that one time, but that is just me.

I did the same thing, I can't remember exactly where I got the flowers from, but they looked very much like the ones here...

congratulations by the way... :)
