Agree with the above, but theres no argument that it is important to magic for me.
I look at it like this (maybe this might be contentious?);
When I perform i spend a great deal of effort making sure I dress right. Smart shoes, and slick attire. Hair neat, neatly shaven. I make sure I smell right - not too overpowing but not smelly!
In the same way, I address my magic like this. I flourish where it is suitable. It makes my card and coin magic look sharp, slick, and a step above the rest. Theres no need to over-do this.. same reason you shouldn't douse yourself in aftershave - but I do think being able to add some flourish is crucial to stand out.
Oftentimes people ask me about a flourish or are particularly interested, so I show them something more impressive.
Also, lets no forget, a lot of good flourishes have effects build in.. aces productions, card revelations - card controls, colour changes etc... They can be a good climax to a trick.
So is flourishing magic? Perhaps not standalone, but its certainly a good embellishment, just like good shoes are.
I find the people that turn their noses up at it are magicians only, and typically, magicians without the dexterity to pull it off themselves. Never has a lay person gone 'eurgh, look at him doing kickass stuff with cards, what a loser!'.
People love flying cards.
Agree to disagree for sure, as some magicians embellish with humour, some with a certain style of performance (mentalism, mysterious, dramatic) so for these guys, flourishing is replaced with their more honed skill areas, and is less necessary.
My style is slick corporate packages, and flourishing suits that.
Hope this helps
