Practising card under watch

Postby bamforth » Aug 4th, '12, 16:52

I just bought James Brown's excellent "still fancy a pot of jam" dvd from Alakazam, and I love the card under watch effect on it.

Does anyone have any tips on how to practice the load without a spare arm?

Thanks!

Ben

You can practice the whole thing as far as the fold, but you can only practive the load by doing it.

It's one you cannot really practice on a live volunteer as they will definitely feel it. Give it a go, I'm sure you will surprise yourself.

Would this happen to be card under the watch of a spectator? If so then it is true that you may not be able to fully practice unless doing it for real but it could be possible to fabricate a practice arm using a poster tube and strapping a watch to this. I've done such a thing for practicing a watch steal and was happy with how it allowed me to become comfortable with the required moves before stepping out onto the dank streets and trying it for real.

Thanks for the suggestions Rob and Dr P.

I feared that you might say I'd just have to try it! I might try the poster tube idea, just to get comfortable with the actual mechanics, but I guess it's mostly about the way you handle the spectator and misdirect their attention etc.

Appreciate the help!

Ni Ben,

As far as mechanics goes there is no real technique. You just shove it under there!

I've had occasions where the card gets a little stuck and I've given a REALLY hard push, sure they would feel it but they just don't. As long as you have something else to say or something to keep them busy while doing it then you are fine.

That makes sense,

I guess the key is that they don't know that this is a card under the watch routine, so why would they suspect that is what you're doing?

I'll summon up the courage to try it :)
