Volunteer Magic Consultants

Postby Aza » Aug 24th, '12, 23:18

Right you lovely lot,

In preparation for creating my showreel, i am also contemplating putting a pilot together of my own magic show, which would run about 1 Hour in length.

Now obviously currently i am a poor struggling magician, but thought i would throw the thought out there as to whether any of you lovely lot here at TM would consider being my magic consultants.

I know services do not come for free, and do not expect everyone to rush forward, but any suggestions as to how i can stand out and be different etc.

I have some ideas of my own, which i am willing to discuss privately.

I look forward to the abuse i recieve in reply to this :D

Much love

Aza

Well i currently do close up/street performing, mainly cards with a few "mentalism" effects

But obviously i am attempting to branch out, my book collection is as follows:

Royal Road
Bobo
Mark WIlsons Complete Course
13 Steps to Mentalism
Tarbells Course

I think i have enough resources to last my entire magic career but like i say i would like to potentially put together something "new" and as magic is "trendy" again, i think it's time to strike whilst the iron is hot....

Sorry Aaron, you know I would help, but living over 180 miles apart and completely tied down with work just can't make it... Will have to wait until Jan for our get together.. Regards Garry :)

I suggest rather than getting one person to do it...without a fee...you should come to one of the meets again with a notepad and pen and ask some serious questions about the kind of thing to perform.
People are always happy to focus on one idea or person and brainstorm effects, methods etc and it'd you'd get the collective wisdom of mentalists, card workers, newbies, people who've been in it for years, street performers...the lot!

OK.. Before anybody can help, it would be a good idea if you were to sit down and write up a business plan. Create on paper exactly what you would like to do. Then, take that to magical advisers, who can tell you if its possible, and to suggest methods and presentations that will make it so. What an advisor won't do, is to have that original idea. Look at Blaine, and Dynamo. they knew what they wanted to do, and bought in people like me, who knew how to do it. :)

The other problem you are going to have is. Who on here do you really know? There is no real way we can help without knowing, and seeing as Magic is visual we must also see what you can do. Listing what books you have doesn't help us know what you are capable of, a list of tricks you do doesn't tell us how well you do them.

Most of the people on here are not professional magicians, many probably don't perform for the lay audience. Nothing wrong with any of the above, but then all you would be getting as 'help' is probably flawed theory. How would you know? How would that help?

As Dale said, first you need a plan. You also need to go out and perform and perform alot in all kinds of settings. If you are already doing that, then you need to take some acting/theatre classes. If for nothing else, then to make contacts in the perfomance industry. One very important thing when trying to accomplish what you are trying to accomplish is that it is a business. Most of us tend to forget that. Most fail because of missing that point.

Do you have an agent? Probably wise to get one if you are thinking of putting together an hour show. Hammering out the details of places you can put on an hours show is not easy. Well it is but filling the place is not easy. Do you know anything about marketing? There is a lot to know.

Put that business plan together, then visit a small business association to get feedback. Remember the banks for financing, insurance companies, Permits. Really it sounds like a lot, and it is, but it is also very possible, but it is more than just throwing a few effects together with some music.

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing you performance. Seriously.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the same person that's been on T-11 asking tons of newbie questions and being told by a number of senior members that you needed to slow down and actually LEARN the basics first (I find it hard to believe two different people would use the same unique name).

As I've said before, I applaud your enthusiasm but you do need to slow down and learn to walk before you can run. . . and I think my replies to you were some of the kinder nudges you were previously given. . . so think about it.

Come on, Craig. That's not realistic! We can't let something as trivial as learning and practice get in the way of him becoming world famous.

Consider yourself corrected Craig, i am a member of TM and only TM.....and Aza is pretty much a nickname for Aaron the world over, so it's not really unique

And i understand your words of wisdom, but i want to collaborate with some people is that such a bad thing?

And thank you for your snipe Dave, i understand how difficult it must be to understand that some of us in this world have goals and ambitions, and i am happy in the knowledge that i will be successful one day and nothing will stop that.

I can vouch for Aaron being a nice guy, in person, who is interested in magic and puts time and effort into his craft.
