One word - fire!

Well, not exactly fire but flash paper. Or the fire wallet mentioned above.

Fire waters are the best thing I find. David Stone swears by his one for approaching groups. I like Tonys idea of water rockets sounds fun. I remember hearing someone say that older methods such as loud drumming of a stick are less effective now as people are not so inclined to stop and watch someone these days (unless in an enviroment like a festival) so its better to do something like sponge balls go one group of people gradually inviting more people to join in. This way you can build up your circle and get to know everyones name by the time to go in to your big act.

Splash Bottle?

Bright balloon, and a loud sound, and a startling production.

Anything with fire works. I usually grab attention by doing some aerial zippo tricks and some flashy cardistry. Things out of the normal tend to attract attention.
