Maybe I'm being a complete idiot here but I realised that I have started drifting into stationers, staring at envelopes, sighing and then leaving. The reason being that I am subconsciously looking for something that I believe doesn't exist anywhere.

Whenever I do a billet routine I use pay envelopes. This is fine for close up type stuff but for stagework I want something a little larger. However, (and envelope sizes are confusing as hell) the next size up is apparently called a C6. This is ok, maybe a little tooooo large but not bad. The C5 is way to big to be placed in the pockets. The problem I have is that every c6 I come across opens on the horizontal which is useless for me. I need it to open on the short end. So, please can someone stop me committing suicide the next time I'm in Rymans and let me know:

Is there anywhere on earth that I can buy a c5 manilla envelope (or slightly smaller??) that opens on the short side? I can't fnd anything on line as I'm clearly a luddite!

I get the frustration. First off, I think I'm right in saying in terms of size, the only difference is the letter? (i.e. A4 = C4, A5=C5 etc)

I think the nearest to what you are looking for are called wage envelopes*, not the money envelopes, but the larger ones, (You can get self seal ones from Poundland).

The ones with money, tax, deductions, NI, total in a table on the front.

Other than that, this is a site I get A3 size (C3) envelopes from that is relatively cheap if you get the right numbers. http://www.simply-envelopes.co.uk/

I have considered using the wage envelopes but they're a bit square - I know - I'm being a little but hard to please!! It's annoying because I see osterlind using the exact size I want and find myself shouting at the telly! Maybe I should write him an e-mail, or steal his luggage?

I know the ones you're referring to. From the Bank Night Routine? Its what the index cards from the Ultra-Board come in.

I think the 3 1/8 x 5 1/2 would be about the right size. Osterlind uses them on bank night. He also uses them in his ETMMM DVD's. Annoyingly, in his 13 steps DVD he does an effect which he calls 'beyond the fold.' (I think???) But quite simply, unless you have the correct envelope then his method simply won't work. The envolpe needs to be constructed in a very particular way.

Then there is W H Smith's
and my A5 envelopes come from Wilkinson's Hardware--Wilkos to regular users. They do have branches all over the place.
Then there is Staples.
And we have a firm called Osbornes.

So what size are you C5's?

Really do not get frustrated just go on searching around

E C Osborne seem to have branches all over the place, our local one is extremely helpful with doing special photocopies (no, not that kind of special!) and will order items in for you if they aren't part of their current stock. Certainly the place to source a lot of magic and mentalist items. In fact, I'd rank these shops at the top of my magic suppliers' list:

1) Stationery shops, Staples, Osbornes, Rymans, W H Smith, Viking Direct
2) The Works
3) Hobbycraft

So what size are you C5's?

My C5's are basically half an A4 which are too large for my pockets. The pay slips would be a quarter of this making them too small. I think I need a C6 which opens on the short side but finding this is proving to be a knightmare. Although I've ordered dealer items before and they come with exactly the size I want, yet I can't find them commercially available.

Thanks for that. I may take one of the envelopes with me and see if anyone can order them in. I din't realise it would be such a struggle but I guess there's just not much call for this sort of thing. Mer!!

I can't believe I spealt nightmare with a 'K.' Although my little boy has been waching Mike the Knight today so maybe it's been rattling around my head. I'm sure there's an effect in there somewhere!

Surely Kev: If as you say in the original post--'but not for stage work'.--You would not be carrying them in your pocket in any case???

Good point! But I wanted to have a pxxxxt index. Not many, just a few. The pay envelopes would just be too small!

A good year or two back, I had EXACTLY the same issue.

After weeks of scouring around, I did eventually find the correct size and orientation...but I'm bu**ered if I can remember where from.

I *think* it was either The Range or Hobbycraft. Certainly worth checking both out.
