There have been several methods used over the years and it really comes down to what the "flesh" will be used on. One of the neatest things I've discovered recently is how to use good old white glue (Elmers). Simple apply it to your form, make a few layers and peel it off. You can stain it with shoe polish (brown) or by soaking it in damp coffee grounds (be careful, if they are too wet the glue will activate again). The shoe polish method keeps moisture in the glue-flesh so it's not overly brittle.
Rubber Cement is another simple, easy to find substance that can be used though it can prove a pain to work with; apply it to wax paper and build up about 3 nice layers. Once you've completed this step grab a bit of corn starch and sprinkle it over the area, gently spreading it with a soft paint brush so that everything is coated, this will give you a none tacky side. . . corn starch is also used with latex for accomplishing the same as well as preservation vs. using chemical "fixers".
I do believe there are some other methods discussed at DragonSkull and I know that certain Bizarre Magick groups have reams of material covering this and other "special effect" systems.
In one of my older pieces I used dental dam with rubber cement so as to create a pocket on my forearm. Using some base make-up and nose putty I was able to blend it in a way that made it "invisible" . . . I'm over simplifying things, but this is something worth experimenting with, depending on the effect you are interested in creating. I used this for my "
Card in Magician" routine back in the early 80s when I was working punk clubs and busking in Hollywood.
Do a search for Special Effects forums that specialize in make-up techniques and latex work.
