I think the coins are copper-plated steel or something similar.

I first found out when I was 'tearing' a 2p to create my own torn coin illusion. I found that the inside of the coin was in fact silver, and the coin was indeed NOT all solid copper.

Keep us posted about the dates thing, though!

But as far as using special 'shimmed' coins for Ravens and PK effects, or even the famous matrix tricks, just remember - you've probably got some magnetic coins right there in your pocket!

Midge...

I don't think so.

No more than by giving away links to retailers, who describe things quite a lot more explicitly!

yes thats true,

have you seen the special swami at magicworld that says under no circumstances must the secret be revealed once it has been bought, and then shows a picture of exactly what it is

It reminds me of that episode of Dad'a Army where the U Boat Captain is asking for the soldiers' names and Mainwaring says, 'Don't tell him Pike!'

Tried using my Bat with copper coins of the realm, no joy I'm afraid.

I will wait for my M5 to turn up and try again.

Hi chaps. (and possibly chapesses, can't tell by username, can you!)

OK... raided my penny jar, and it would seem that any UK copper coin which is post-1991/92 is attracted to ANY magnet, and coins which pre-date '91/92 are NOT attracted.

I wonder what happened in that time?

Cheaper? Last longer?

Who knows!

But they ARE as I previously claimed, magnetic.

OK, folks, I checked as many copper coins as I could find and siege is right about the 'changeover' date. All we need now are some extremely strong magnets and we can pick people's pockets from about 3 miles away. We'd have to avoid the attracted trucks and buses though.

PS Re Dad's Army and my age - I saw the repeats on UK Gold. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. And my colleagues at the Dunroamin Old Folk's Home will back me up - oooh, what a giveaway!

You might find that there are a few non-magnetic coppers between 92 and 95 but from then on they are all magnetic.
Back to the idea of shielding, I don't think even a ferromagnetic box would work unless it too was magnetised to channel the field correctly, just surrounding the magnet with steal will not do this. I would agree that the best way is the isolation chamber idea, for those of you who haven't played with one of these you will need to keep things at least 20-30 cm away to stop them from being attracted, that's why it comes in a big box!

"New" (post 91/92) English copper coins are not made of copper or silver. Neither of them being magnetic. They're made from copper plated steel. They've been made of steel since September 1992.

The reason that they're made of steel now is that it's a lot cheaper than base metals such as copper, zinc and tin.

And as for the other bit... If a piece of lead can stop gamma rays from getting through it, I can imagine it would stop a high percentage of magnetic rays. Could be wrong though!
Also, if you're wearing lead anywhere on your person,be careful you don't cut yourself with it ;)

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism
