Alphabet Cards

Postby Lady of Mystery » Sep 13th, '12, 07:54

Morning my lovelies!

I was wondering if anyone's come across a decent set of alphabet cards. I need to find a deck with an indifferent back design and without an index in the corner. I've looked at childrens flash cards which would be ideal for what I've got in mind but these all tend to have different pictures on the back. I've also seen some alphabet cards in cards4magic as well as scrabble cards but these all have an index in the corner which wont work for me. I have ordered some Scrabble cards and will see if I can remove the index somehow but wondered if anyone had come across what I'm after. If all else fails, I'll just have to resort to a blank faced deck and a sharpie but don't really want to do that.

a quick trawl finds this : http://www.elc.co.uk/Complete-Learning- ... lt,pd.html

it says some are flash cards, which are the double sided type, but it has 52 alphabet snap cards, which presumably have indifferent backs ( or the game would be rather silly )

They look perfect, thanks Stacy. I'll take a look at those next time I'm in the Earl Learning Centre, a good excuse for a trip over to Tunbridge Wells too :D

I'd be interested to know what you use them for, I've been contemplating alphabetical routines ever since I saw a pack of sponge letters for toddlers in a toy store...

I'm going to make Corinda's Incredible Slate and use it as a reveal for a book test. The book's a children's book which is why I was really looking for children's flash cards.

Not sure whether these would suit?

They're marked, so offer a range of other possibilities.

Maybe overkill for what you have planned though.

Those do look really nice and would work well but a little pricey for what I'm going to use them for. They do look good though

If your going to go with the scrabble cards, some cotton wool and nail varnish remover will take away the index cleanly

Could you, or a friendly person with a suitable printer, simply use one of the many free alphabet flashcard designs? You can't get much more indifferent than blank backs.

I had a quick search and there are a lot out there, but many have pictures, or look a bit too childish. This one had a good selection and note the one that is in "portrait" orientation, which is described as a children's book font.

You'd also have as many spares as you could print out. It might not be ideal having to get both lower and upper case letters, but you could have two sets, I suppose. Sizing might be an issue too, but again that can be a problem with using a real set of kids' cards.

Another DIY option is to stamp some yourself. A company called Penny Black makes a set of letters called "Robust", which comes in two variations (capitals and lower case). Stamping onto blank bicycle stock might be a bit tricky, because of the finish, but you might be OK with archival ink. Be prepared for lots of attempts if you aren't used to stamping. It will be a lot easier to stamp onto regular cardstock that's been cut to the right size, but that may require investing in a good paper trimmer, a corner rounder (should you care about that) and the right sort of card.

Again, the good thing about this is that you can make more if you need them, and you don't have to have the Qs, Xs and Zs if you don't need them, and can have multiples of more common letters. For all you Bruce Bernstein fans - Eat at Joe's.

I have thought about printing them out but don't usually like the look of printed at home things. For this though it might actually work well, the routine's a stage routine so printing onto A5 sheets of card would look better than smaller cards. This is going to be part of a bigger routine based on childhood with some fun regression and some other silly mental bits so I wanted to use children's flash cards to fit in with the theme. I actually quite like the idea of mixing upper and lowercase, it just seems to make things look a little more random.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll try a few things out and see what works.

I saw these the other day, and reminded me of someone asking for some. Strangely I hadn't read this post before then.

My dear, an alternative website to that already suggested with some pleasant designs would be http://www.sparklebox.co.uk/literacy/al ... FQd2K6cc15

Super suggestions folks, and yet another example of how helpful TM members are. I'm also looking for these sort of things but for 'normal' usage!
